Description "Don't be offended by my frank analysis,
Think of it as personality dialysis.
Now that I've chosen to become a pal,
A sister, an advisor,
There's nobody wiser,
Not when it comes to popular.
I know about popular,
And with an assist from me,
You'll be who you'll be,
Instead of dreary who you were--are!
There's nothing that can stop you
From becoming popu-ler. Lar!
La, la, la, la,
We're gonna make you popular.
And though you protest,
Your disinterest,
I know clandestinely,
You're gonna grin and bear it,
Your newfound popularity.
La, la, la, la,
You'll be popular,
Just not quite as popular as me!"
~"Popular" from Wicked the Musical

This has to be my all-time favorite scene in the show. Galinda is so bouncy and bubbly and brazenly ridiculous that you can't help but laugh your head off. And it's so funny how Elphaba just has to sit there and endure the antics the entire time, like ".......what are you doing??"

I got the general pose from a video of Katie Rose Clarke performing this with Carmen Cusack (I love them!), and it was so entertaining because KRC's Galinda is so adorkable and spastic, but Carmen was utterly deadpan for almost the entire scene. I don't know how she didn't laugh.

Anyway, I'll stop ranting about how much I love this scene/song. I decided since my last picture that Elphaba's face didn't have enough character the way I drew her, so I changed her quite a bit, mostly her nose and her face-shape. I think she looks better, but I'll leave that for all of you to decide. And drawing Galinda's "popular" dress makes me dizzy...............@_@......soooo much pink!!

As always, comments and constructive criticism are appreciated! Visit my gallery [link] for more WICKED fanart! kthxbai!

(Yes, I really do have to say that I'm not a gelphie fan on every picture of mine that has been submitted to a gelphie group by request of the group itself. I'm that anti-gelphie.)

I also sit with the anti-gelphie train, I can see them as a Brotp but never as an OTP (Fiyeraba all the way for me) and I have reasons for that. In fact I have a love/hate relationship with Glinda both in Wicked and Wizard of Oz.

I agree with you that they are a brotp, and Fiyeraba is my otp and glad that you like it too.
Anyway, I was wondering what is the hate part in Glinda for you? you don't need to answer if you don't want to.
But it's nice to hear others thoughtsΒ instead of your own, sorry if I press you or anything.Β

I'm sure I've seen people do art of this scene with Katara and Toph. xD In my own fiction, SRU!Katara is a huge fan of musicals, especially Wicked (which is my personal fav, though I won't get to see it live until this winter), and she ends up making fun of her new friend, 'Smellerbee,' through the song.

I guess part of why I love Wicked so much is also because it's...pretty literally a Wizard of Oz fanfic that's become a popular, official thing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

punker--rocker In reply to Destiny-Smasher [2012-08-08 02:40:36 +0000 UTC]

Lol somehow I think Katara would love musicals. And yeah I've heard Wicked referred to as glorified fan-fiction.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Destiny-Smasher In reply to punker--rocker [2012-08-08 03:07:13 +0000 UTC]

It just makes sense for me, haha. "Glorified fan-fiction" makes it sound bad.
The new show "Sherlock" is exactly that, though, too -- literally, modern-day AU fanfiction (just like SRU, haha) that the people making it had enough money to turn into a show!

But yes. I love Wicked. I cannot wait to finally see it.

Yeah I think the person who said that hated the book or something. He had a point though, just without the negative connotations.

Oh, you haven't seen it yet? Dude it's awesome. You are gonna die laughing. I saw it last summer and was an instant fan.

Destiny-Smasher In reply to punker--rocker [2012-08-08 03:42:20 +0000 UTC]

I've listened through a recording of the soundtrack (like a CD I think?) and have tried reading the context of the story on the internet. It looks like the musical made adjustments to the book for the better (the original book's summary comes across as something more like Twilight! ^_^; ), so I can't wait to see the whole story played out as intended.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

punker--rocker In reply to Destiny-Smasher [2012-08-08 12:17:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the book was definitely too dark for a story about Oz. The musical is very lighthearted and humorous, although it has it's heavier moments.

I'm a big fan of the band Yes, and I do have a cursory of "Wicked" (although no more than that). I think that the album "Going for the One" could unite them, [link] (if I got their personalities wrong, tell me). Anyway, Glinda (or Galinda, whatever) would enjoy the unusual accessibility of songs like "Wondrous Stories" [link] and "Going for the One". [link] [link] In fact "Wondrous Stories" and "Turn of the Century" [link] are ballads like only Yes could do them. She'll probably gravitate towards the even more accessible "90125" [link] album (seriously though, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" was a huge crossover hit [link] [link] ). Elphaba would like it for the strange time signatures (you try playing in 13/8ths), the fact that the lyrics are spacy in the extreme, and the 15 and a half minute long song "Awaken". [link] She'll move towards the more complex stuff in "Close to the Edge" [link] and "Tales from Topographic Oceans" [link]

As for the music of this musical itself, I was a bit surprised to find out that no less than six songs exceed the five minute mark. Is it usual for a Broadway Musical to have this sort of thing?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

punker--rocker In reply to AndytheB-Artist [2012-02-13 21:25:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes is a decent band. I'm into heavier stuff myself.

And I don't know a lot of musicals, but I don't think most have extremely long songs. They've got to keep the story going.
