Description
Aurore, from the Brothers Grimm's 'Sleepng Beauty'. This painting is meant to represent the moment when she awakes from her slumber. I think this is a sad moment, because she is about to find out that her mother has died. This is probably the best painting I have ever done, I really enjoyed painting it. This year at school I am focusing on the Brothers Grimm's Fairytales as my theme, so be prepared to see a lot of Grimm related art coming your way!
I didn't give up and use ink outlines! Are you proud of me??
~ Please give me constructive critisism - the only way for me to improve is to acknowledge my mistakes and learn from them!~

The body position slightly reminds me of "The Birth of Venus" Its far more beautiful than anything I could paint.

Beautiful, again. I love the lips and the roses, how they pick work off each other but also enhance the other subtle hues... gorgeous

Wow! How'd I miss seeing this when it was posted? And kudos for such a tiny format! (Although washes ARE easier to control when they're smaller, aren't they?)

Thankyou so much! Yes, small washes are so much easier! I haven't tried a big painting in watercolour yet.. I'm a bit scared... But I will have some coming soon
The main reason I painted this small was because the paper is so much cheaper I'm such a scunge!

First of all, it's absolutely beautiful and I love it! She actually looks like a cross between you and Mum which is really funny. Why is she sad if she hasn't found out her mum has died yet though?
Your choice of palette is wonderful, and the detail in the face and hair is great - it is a little inconsistent though, when you look at the rest of her body. The coat is largely plain and ... undetailed? That's not a word. Perhaps you've got into the habit of doing hair in one, realistic style that doesn't always gel with the style of the rest of the artwork?
As always, your border is impeccable! Impeccable timing, your majesty. And my eyes are continuously drawn to those twisted, fading out trees, like there's something secret in the background that's about to glomp her. In a nasty way.

Me and Mum?? Really? I don't see it...
Hmm.. good point... Maybe, she has just found out that her mother has died, and the trees are the depression that is about to engulf her? I don't know... I should know though!
Yes, I need to work on cloth/fur/stuff - John Howe pointed that out too, when he critiqued this..(!!!!

Beautiful work as always. This time, I'm in awe in your choice of colors, they all just go well together. And her expression, it's somber and heart-felt, but not dramatically depressed (I swear I have the worst wording problem anyways, but oh well). I think I might have mentioned this, but I so wish I could do illustrations like these. Not even with PS can I do beautiful work such as this.

Hey Haku! How are you?
Thankyou very much, I am glad I was able to convey the impression of sadness/sombreness (don't worry, I have issues with words too!! >.>). I wasn't sure if it would be obvious enough, but apparently it is *dances*.
You know what they say; practice makes perfect! (Ok.. so what if there is no such thing as perfection.... but you get the drift )

I'm busy busy busy, and in desperate need of a time management class. BADLY. But at least I've been sketching during classes, so it's not like I haven't been drawing and at least I don't have to worry about getting too rusty. (Though it's kind of bad I can't focus, oops).

I have the same problem, I end up drawing in all my classes and not paying attention to what the teacher is saying I also need time management classes! Speaking of which.. I should get off the computer and do some homework... ok.. I'm going... to do homework... soon...ok...now...

Hello lovely friend!
I am very happy to know that your gallery after the silence always resurgence with a fascinating work.
I would like to be this: take the show a work and show a good work always.
I'm trying it. I'm looking to be working quietly in a drawing for a long time until he actually get out as I wish. I am looking also to improve my technique.
It is very difficult when you evolve you want to always many drawings in a short time very short. We are human beings not an industry. Art should be taken lightly and discipline.
I saw that his work for the first time in a cyber coffee while I was traveling.
I was lost in a city field without my drawing materials and no book to read. And the interesting thing that I found a book on this trip in a used book store. The book is "Gulliver's Travels." I've read this book and have it at home, but I like to read again and as I read I thought I would create a series of drawings for this book and now I'm reading your description of your work and see you have a similar idea to illustrate the stories of the Brothers Grimm's. Connections, affinities. This is so good.
I eventually gave up that idea. Now I'm interested in studying the best techniques and stop wanting to do three or four drawings per day. My Deviantart gallery turned the gallery of laziness and anxiety. And there is no need.
I think it will take longer for you to see any drawing of mine. I will do differently this time.
I divagues much. Forgive me!
About your picture I can say is that it fascinates me the feeling that it conveys. He brings me peace, serenity and light. Something almost sacred. But there is also a sadness in his eyes like the one I see in the design of your Avatar. Sometimes I think that this is their eyes. I always see the artist in his art. But in your picture you are with a happy expression. I like to see you so.
About the technique I have little to say. I do not know much about technique. I can only say that I found your design very beautiful and it deeply touched my feelings.

Officially the longest comment I have recieved Thankyou!
I think, that it is important to be able to differentiate between a sketch and a finished work. I find this hard, but I am trying to train myself I think you should to continue to draw a couple of drawings a day - this is something that really, really helps one to improve. But, in combination with this, continue with your idea of taking your time with finished peices. Sketching helps to work the kinks out of piece before you start.. I need to do this more ... but it helps to know where you want the piece to go before you start!
I am glad my painting conveyed the right feeling - that was exactly what I was aiming for! I'm glad that it had such an effect on you!
I think that the majority of the characters in my work end up looking sad, is because I can't be bothered feeling sad, so I try to get it out of my system by painting sad things. That's probably why I look so happy - because generally I am pretty optomistic; I get the sadness out of my system by painting it out

This is beautiful. The detailed, symetrical border really sets it as a fairtale illustration, and I think it was really necessary because without it it would seem more like a portrait of the Virgin Mary. That in itself is not a problem, as by connotation it shows how both serene and poingantly sad she looks. But the setting is very important here.
I like how you didn't use ink to outline, it gives it a light, airy look, and you did quite well without them. Linework has its place (I love linework! ), and I think it was a good choice to refrain from it here.
The hands are very soft and gentle, but the finger joints of her right hand are a little lost, not defined enough, making her hand appear too small. It's a tough balance to achieve, between making the hands appear feminine and youthful and also making them well defined. But you will get there.
All in all, it's a wonderful, well-rounded piece!

Thankyou very, very much!
I actually had this peice critqued by John Howe and he said similar things about the hands I really need to work on hands...
I need to experiment with using ink/not using ink lineart within my works, I don't know which I like better :S (The only reason I need to decide is that all my new work is going to be for school, and they make us make annoying decisions such as this >.>)
Thankyou so much for taking the time to critique my work.

Ugh, I hear ya, art school can make you do things you don't really want to, push you in directions you may not be interested, but in the long run if you put your heart and a lot of hard work into it, it is very worth it! Whatever you decide about your artwork as a whole, what direction to go in, it is entirely up to you. Your teachers are there to guide you, sharpen your thinking skills and foster the development of technique, but not to tell you what to paint or draw.
You're very welcome, keep it up!!

I tend to be very subtle with colours, but I usually make them too pale :S I deliberatley tried to make them more substantial this time, while also keeping the subtlety
I'm glad you like it!
