Tom Nook is a student worker in Nintendo High's supply store. He takes his job very seriously, as he considers it practice for when he takes over management of his family's local department store Nookingtons. Tom has something of a silver tongue; he could probably sell you the gum on the bottom of your shoe if he were so inclined. Thankfully, his way with words is curbed by his moral code, which is more than he can say for his rival Crazy Redd, the fox in charge of the black market being run in the men's room.

...Not much else to say, really. I guess working in the student store gives credit towards a business course or something? I know there were business courses that let kids get job experience, money, and class credit all at once in my high school.
