Description LOOKY

I HAD A DESCRIPTION TYPED OUT AND MY LAPTOP JUST DELETED IT EXCEPT FOR LOOKY

and my noodles are gonna be overcooked if I re-type it!

SO JUST ENJOY AND I'LL UPDATE THIS WITH WHAT THIS FASCINATING PONY WITH BREATHING ISSUES IS AFTER I EAT AND WATCH THE DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES SEASON PREMIERE

WOOO PONIES WITH NO MUZZLES

Kay now I have time to a proper artist note/description/whatever this is.

SO I DOWNLOADED DESKTOP PONIES, and then after a lot of digging, the "official" modifiable pony base was too complicated and not very base-like. So I set out to make my own animated pony sprite base for editing. I needed (and need) the practice for both spriting and animating anyway. (Fun fact: With the help of a tutorial, I used to play around with editing pokemon sprites and creating really lame fakemon sprites~ So I'm not completely inexperienced! XD)

Annnyway I've been working on this isnce.... Friday I think? Thursday? I've been working on it for less than a week, anyhow. I woulda had it done faster if I wasn't continulously interrupted by being busy XD I drew all the frames in MS Paint, based on these sprite frames: [link] because there are no, as far as I can tell, guide to MLP:FiM walk cycles/run cycles/trot cycles/etc. So I drew my frames facing the opposite direction of the reference sprites (I draw easier that way for the various curvy lines of ponies; curse you lack of ambidextrousness) on MS Paint. I basically just edited the legs of this big sketch, copied, pasted, shrunk down in the unreliable MS Paint way, copy pasted hte previous frame's head for size consistency, made hte sprite, next frame. I prefer MS Paint for pixel-level editing, you see. Sadly it's not the best for animation (props to all you talented MS Paint artists & animatiors, yay!) due to the lack of layers, so even though my animations are usually jerky anyway, it didn't help matters.

Also, pony legs are hard to draw DX They're so simple that it's difficult to work with them. Often times they end up looking like suction cups or like hte hind legs are broken XD So yeah.

but anyway. Despite naming it Base Pony, and putting hte images in my "bases" folder I made fort hem, I am not gonna use this for pony animations X'D Next time, I'll do the whole thing in Photoshop, instead of jsut usting Photoshop for lining up the layers, transparency-ifying-them (because it's too hard to say "making them have transparent backgrounds") and animating them.

I can't remember where I was going with all this, if anywhere; so instead enjoy Breathy Problems mcWeird Neck's constant journey to the left of the screen despite never moving an inch with any step.~

Look at that one lonely ear, the other hidden by invisible hair.

It's a pretty decent animation, but it has some funny little inconsistencies. It slides a tad bit into an uncanny valley with it's forelegs rotating round each other as it walks and with it's chest and neck constantly changing sizes, like it can't decide if it's on steroids or not. It's one ear, unblinking eye overall color scheme make it look like a creature of horror... which is quite awesome when you think about it. Picture this story (whether it be animated, comic, novel or just a short story) "The Thing That Moves".

It does foray into odd valleys, doesn't it? "The Thing That Moves came from the Uncanny Valley"

Hey, it's Meat Pony!
First of all, I really dig that the legs are articulated to show motion (Joints bending and stuff). The fact that your first foray (as far as I know) into animation didn't just rotate the legs 45 degrees and call it done is already putting you way ahead of the curve.
Only issues are:
Spore tier huge eye, seriously, that thing is creeping me out.
The front legs are a little off, I'm not sure what's causing it, I think it's a perspective issue. It almost seems like the front two legs are switching places.

Meat Pony! XD Quite wonderful name for 'em -nods-

I've forayed into animation a'fore, though I don't think I've ever been so lazy as to just rotate everything O_o
Maybe Meat Pony wants to creep you out with his unblinking giant eye~ And yeah, I had a looootttt of trouble with dem front legs. The frames didn't quite match up since I did all this without layers, which makes checking that things line up right rather odd. The legs jsut kinda shift sizes and shapes and positions, so yeah, looking like hte legs are switching places is a fairly accurate description of the creepy pony's walk cycle. *nods*

Animation isnΒ΄t easy, in fact, itΒ΄s pretty hard.

Hind legs looks fairly good.

It seems, front legs have slightly less frames, they are a bit choppier than hind, but I can only imagine things. Oh, they are changing their width, but you said, that they are fairly hard to draw

Overall movement is like...lizard walking on hind legs, swinging

Needless to say, very good work in MS Paint I tried some animation but I havenΒ΄t created anything

Oh, I'm well aware of its difficulties!~ I've been trying to progress past basic walk/run cycles off and on for years XD These people who just whip up random animations, even really rough ones, are, like, amazing.

The overall animation is only five frames, so it's entirely possible for the front legs to not have enough frames and be magically size-changing. Thank you for saying the hind legs look fairly good, though, since those tend to be the hardest legs for me to draw on animals (especially ponies, darn this simplistically difficult art style!)

A lizard, mmm? I can sort of see that, they tend to have very odd movements when they're on their hind legs.~

Animation can be a fulfilling process (or at least various animators seem to feel that way from what I can tell) so you should practice and create things! If nothing else, it's fun to try!

This actually looks incredibly groovy for a half-baked attempt.

(Half-baked GOOD, or...half-baked GOOD-IER-IEST? You be the judge.)

No, really:

dA emotion unrelated.

XD Like I was *going* to say before my laptop rudely deleted my artists note, it woulda been muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch better if I hadn't drawn the individual frames in MS Paint and then carefully shrunk them down to pixel-fy them with a copy-pasted head for consistency.~ Indeed, next time I'll go Photoshop all the way so they match up better! X3

WELL

UM

IT MOVES

THAT'S GOOD, RIGHT?

Actually that is pretty good. Needs some tweaks, but overall it's a decent attempt!

fdsfdsfdsfs LAPTOP STOP DELETING THINGS WHILE I TYPE THEM OKAY?

but yes. Thank you! ^___^ It does need tweaks, which are rather hard in MS Paint, but I didn't use standard layer-based animation here, so it actually is pretty decent for not being sketched the traditional animation way -nods- Though this pony probably has a lot of neck problems, poor dear probably sees a chiropractor-pony every day.

-huggles you so much and then runs off to edit the artists note-
