Description
Well, maybe technically sort of a tongue-in-cheek horror than horror itself.Since I now have film privileges on DA I thought I'd upload a real version of this instead of my crappy youtube version... I also thought today would be a great day to do it due to Halloween and all.
This is my first year animated short for the Open Show at Calarts. My film actually made it into the Producer's show so I was happy for that.
There's a lot wrong with it, but it was a lot of fun. My first time really extensively animating and I was just sort of thrown into it without really much of an idea as to what I was doing.
first year restrictions were:
no color (got the spot of color I have okayed)
no voice acting
1 minute 30 seconds
we wer given roughly 3 / 4 months to complete this assignment.
Animated by hand, traditionally, using punched paper and living off of a diet of cuties and poptarts.
The look was loosely inspired by Gorey's works as he is always going to be one of my favorite artists.
Currently working on my second year film. This time featuring a cute little girl named Maddy instead of a big fat man with whale teeth.
Music and sound by Jarred McAdams (my brother!).
Background Artwork and animation by me.

As a watcher from some years ago already, I congratulate you on your DD! I didn't even know you got one - but you truly deserve it!!!
I'd been following the work you did on this film and I have to say, it sent shivers down my spine. It is really well made, with wonderful image composition, splendid music, and appropriate rhythm. Thumbs up on this, and I really look forward to seeing your next film.
Congrats again!

It's not different When I said "see it properly" I just meant "an in-site version with less compression" haha. so no worries, it's not any different. Just me wording things badly.

I love this crazy cat. Great use of black, white, and lines to get that oh so creepy look. It's wonderful to see something so scary and that is also very original!

this is great... very macabre, with all of the visual and audio elements fitting perfectly. the man sighing at the very end with the cat rubbing against him after it all... what an end.
congrats on your well-deserved DD.

What program did you use? You've inspired me to try out animation, and I want to get this same program~

Animation was done by hand on punched paper in col erase pencil on the first draft and then clean-up animation was done using a dark graphite pencil. I alpha channeled out the red lines in photoshop using a red-line prep action and then colored every frame by hand in photoshop. everything was composted in After Effects and then edited together in Final Cut Pro.
Unfortunately the program isn't what made the film look like this, the look of the film was just achieved by my personal taste and a lot of meticulous work by hand, the program is just what I put it in to make it all work together. That isn't to say you can't get cool effects with these programs (you can, after effects is especially cool) but this is more of a traditional film (just computer colored).

Wow! Wonderful work! I really love the ambiance, it reminds me E.A.Poe's stories. And I had recognized the Gorey's art inspiration. Awesome artist, I totally agree with you! *_*
I am very impatient to see your next animation!
And for the music, does your brother has a website or does he post his songs somewhere? I like his work too, and I want to hear more of what he does.
Well, congratulations! Great work!

Dude! this is was made/shot traditionally? wow, that's awesome...makes me sad though, now I want my own animation equipment, I got a taste of 2D animating when I was in art school, and was empowered by the potential it had, but of course when I left, I lost the access to any equipment.
amazing job on this, good luck with where ever you're headed!
