Despite the fact Its just a fish I feel terribly sorry for it, and he looks so sad. Was it behind a piece of glass? Because it looks like its snowing which makes it even more lonely. Beautiful work, I love it.

What I find amazing about this photograph is that you manage to capture so much emotion in something that can not express it, or at least not with its face outside of the infamous "mouth open", "mouth closed" expressions. It seems to be the situation that the fish is in that causes us such grief.

It's a very sad thing to lose such a beautiful creature, in such a seemingly lonely place. I know how long it takes for a guy like this to grow, and to see that journey end is very moving.

I was going to comment on the unique sadness/strangely beautiful quality of the image, but the last line of your description thew me off. The mouth is so uncannily like Gollum's I wonder if they actually did use a fish to model it. How appropriate for the little slinker.
