Description
'The wind was sharp and cold, despite how warm it had been minutes earlier. Her limbs were stiff, muscles rigid, stuck in a riders position with her face pressed against the thick warm neck of her steed. Despite the heavy trench coat, hat and scarf, her bones were chilled, evident as her body started to quake. Lean muscles under her were tensed and pumped harder; trees, brush, and leaves moving by in a blur. Hours had passed, and still the forest had yet to end, not helped by the fact they had been winding and double-backing to lose their pursuers. It was another 20 minutes before she could feel the ghosting spring start to falter. The trees began showing again in small pieces, then she could count them again. Loud, dry, hazardous panting was suddenly able to be heard, as the large body beneath her shook to the core as what energy the steed had was depleted. Gradually he stumbled into a stop, legs shaking with each heavy breath, body sticky with cold sweat. They kept still, the forest silent with just the heavy breaths and distant crickets making any sound. For a solid minute they waited, listening carefully, before she let go of a breath she didn’t notice she had been holding, and his legs gingerly fell forward, folding themselves under his body with a heavy sigh. Gingerly she unclenched her muscles, grimacing as she tried to stretch out her arms and legs, sliding down his slightly damp back onto the frosted grass. Her right leg still remained across his back; both of them level with the ground, relieved they had managed to make a getaway.
“Next time…I go into town by myself.”
She muttered against the ground, arms still clenched to her chest, feeling the snort from the beast rather than hearing it. She could feel its empty stare, and the muscles move as its head leaned over. Her head turned to look up at a wicked face. A barren skull, as red as blood with teeth that had been painted with fire bore down on her, a sight that grew goose bumps along her skin and what had made the guards turn on them in the first place.
Rather than scrambling back, screaming, and finding something to fight it with, she reached a wary arm up and around the base of the head, his thick neck gradually rightening itself and pulling her up as well. She let her arms drop once she was upright, cringing at the sore and still cold feeling in them, easing up on her knees and awkwardly moving to his chest. Dropping down, she would lean between his folded, bandaged legs, the Siren letting her be warmed by his seemingly fire-bathed flesh before they returned to their flight. When she slept, his head lowered over her shoulder, empty gaze keeping a guardians eye on her sleeping form.'
