Description
[See video link below to see it in actionSuper, SUPER proud to finally present this thing! Over the past three years, I've had the pleasure to work with audio plugin developer Steve Duda on brand new monster of a software synth. Today, it was released to the public for the first time. The hype has been huge. The official product page can be found here:
www.xferrecords.com/products/s…
Also recommended, here's a video walkthrough of its core features from John Lehmkuhl of PlugInGuru:

About the GUI
Over three years, the GUI has been through many, many variations. This is the first VST GUI I've built from the ground up, so I had the freedom to also exercise my brain in layout and usability - something I wish I had with standard bitmap replacement skinning. For those of you who come to use Serum, some areas may seem a little cramped, which is due to last minute ideas that weren't a part of the original design. Also, the WT Editor popup is the ONLY page I haven't touched (4:51 in the video above). It was put together by somebody else to help get it out of the door while I worked on other things. I'll no doubt tackle that page in a future update.
That's about it for now. Sorry for the shitty resized thumbs of the other pages. I'll eventually get around to putting full res of each page once I've tidied any remaining bits and pieces.

They're supposed to be used at the same time, yes. Colormap is just for everything that isn't an image, i.e. fonts, displays, grids, etc. They're not two different approaches to a skin but rather control two different aspects of a skin.

Thanks for getting back to me! I thought that must be the case, but I can't seem to make it work via my best guesses so far.
How do I use them both together? I tried inserting the colormap.png into the folder the bitmaps are in, but it doesn't change the parts I can change when colormap is the only file in the folder. Where am I going wrong on this?

what an honour to come across this. i can't express to you how much your design has changed musicians' lives. the most comprehensive and coherent interface for any synth i've ever used.

Gorgeous. I ended up getting Serum a couple weeks ago, and the interface is definitely the best I've ever seen. The layout allowed me to immediately grasp everything and begin creating great-sounding patches that I never could have done previously without quite a bit of trial and error.(although, I have been using Synthmaster as my main synth since June) Phenomenal work, although I'd still be somewhat curious as to what would surface if Serum supported 3rd-party skins.

Wow, cant believe I stumble upon the man who created the gui for Serum, my favorite VST of all time....and Its funny you mention the WT editor, I always thought it seemed like it was strangely different from the rest of the program, I just never could place my finger on what it is. Now I know! Well congratulations and very very fine work! I love Using Serum, partly because of the GUI. Ill be trying your Ableton skin in a few minutes Thanks my friend!! Keep up the talented and great work!

yo man any tips on how i should go about changing up the skin a bit? How do i make the skin work and where do i get the images to edit?

You'll need an app for editing .dll files (Resource Hacker is my go-to, it's free.). Inside of Serum.dll, there is a folder named PNG. You'll need to extract those, edit, and replace them. You might run into a few minor bumps along the way but nothing a quick google can't help with. Have fun! Even now I still haven't officially finished it.

Wonderful work. I love to play with it.
Can you tell us which tools you used to create the GUI?

Is there skins that can be applied to Serum? Themes/Skins
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
PureAV In reply to seiSsroo [2014-12-01 07:06:39 +0000 UTC]
Currently, no. Steve wasn't keen on spending time on making it skinnable as there're a lot of elements that are code generated. You could replace images in the .dll but you won't be able to change colors or positions of displays and such.
