Haha, I agree. It's also refreshing to see a guy who agrees. I was wary a lot of people would start with the automatic "you must be jealous" if I brought up these points. Which is really frustrating considering we're talking about a video game character.

She claims she's the best at everything, yet she's unsuitable for the vents and will let one of you squad mates get eaten by the seekers if you have her set up the biotic field.

Sutori-Artifex In reply to Wheat-Os [2014-02-10 08:36:10 +0000 UTC]

Legion for Vents, Garrus for Fireteam 1. Tali and Mordin for Squad 1.

Miranda for FT 2, Tali+Garrus for Swarm Squad, and Jack for Seeker Swarm Barrier.

Tali and Garrus for Human-Reaper fight. Mordin for crew-evac, saved everyone.

Not a single life lost.Β

Ran it all with a Colonist War Hero, Male Paragon Vanguard Shepard. Romanced Tali. Carried on into ME3 and used the MEHEM mod to keep Shepard alive for a funeral for David Anderson and a hug from Tali

Well, we now know that someone on BioWare's staff spent hours crafting that lovely behind. I think the camera knew that the best way to avoid an office shooting was to do this. That and BioWare has a thing for asses. (FemShep anyone?)

Miranda's rear is just overkill. The greatest use it has to me is as a human shield when I have nowhere else to take cover. o_o

Maskydoo [2013-01-09 19:46:31 +0000 UTC]

I've seen superhero costumes that weren't as tight as that. Those pants would have to be specially made for that purpose in order to give such a wedgie.

I guess Bioware couldn't have an intelligent, independent, competent, driven woman without reducing her back down to the level of object. I really think Miranda is a great character, it's a shame that the camera is always around her ass.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PureLightHealer In reply to Maskydoo [2013-01-09 20:26:27 +0000 UTC]

I absolutely agree. For such an intelligent game, it can be demeaning. Especially as a girl, it's a little insulting to see the focus being taken away from "what lies beneath" kind of quality, skill and ability, in order to focus on shallow "eye-candy". Particularly when the themes being dealt with are more mature than the average video game.

A woman should still qualify as beautiful, even if she's not in a skin-tight suit with all her 'assets' pouring out. It goes the same for males. I don't need one to be half naked an flexing his abs in order to be attracted. In fact that's a downright turn-off.

Thanks again for the insightful comment

Maskydoo In reply to PureLightHealer [2013-01-09 22:33:48 +0000 UTC]

You're right. I think a lot of the dislike people have for Miranda has very little to do with her actual character, but just the way she is presented. She looks like a Bond girl right out of the... oh, I don't know, 70s. All she really needs is the bellbottoms. Her attire is just completely impractical for the role she plays, and the camera seems overly-eager to display her "assets." It's like someone, somewhere thought, this character is TOO competent, she might give Shepard a run for his/her money, better knock her down a notch the way we do all women in society. We can't have anyone taking her seriously, after all. >
I'm planning making my own ME comic, and I'm re-designing Miranda's costume. I'll let her outfit remain somewhat tight-ish and light (no armor) deciding her role is something more specialized than "human tank." She's a smart lady, good at uncovering conspiracies and tacking people and chasing cases. I imagine her as more of an intelligence agent of sorts, with some kick butt biotic abilities (I'm thinking Black Widow from the Avengers (the movie.) I won't give her James Vega heavy armor, but the wedgies from Hades, can go.

I think that you're ME pictures bring up really good and interesting points in clever ways, and that's worth discussion.

I even made my brother read your comment because I think you completely nailed my irritations with the gaming industry as a whole. Needless to say, he totally agreed.

I'm glad you're redesigning Miranda for your own comic! I think it would do her much more credit.

Haha "the wedgies from Hades" - Yes! Those can definitely go -__-

Hey, as long as you post things that spark conversation, conversation will be had.

Your brother sounds awesome. Sometimes guys (and even many women) don't really "get" what the problem is with how women are presented in games, at least partially because it's not much different from how many of us are, sadly, accustomed to seeing women portrayed in just about any media. My answer is usually to ask people to compare characters like Alyx Vance and, say, Bayonetta.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PureLightHealer In reply to Maskydoo [2013-01-18 05:35:51 +0000 UTC]

Those are both good comparisons. You're right, I'm grateful my brother understands. He laughs at it sometimes, because he thinks it's just that ridiculous, but I know it bothers him too. In fact, he prefers female characters who are more reasonably outfitted rather than the ones who look like they could jump out of the pages of some stuck-in-the-basement male fantasy magazine. You can't really take them seriously otherwise, and that's the pity.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Maskydoo In reply to PureLightHealer [2013-01-18 05:48:35 +0000 UTC]

I agree.

You know, Anita Sarkeesian, who you may have heard of for her series Tropes Vs Women, analyses the way women are portrayed in various media. Mostly, she stuck to movies before, but being a gamer, she's also working on a series about female characters in video games. You might find this interesting.
