Alright now that the whole gym is over I can finally come clean:

The actual gym battle required 4 different Pokemon. Gerald did lead them all and got a good hit on Miltank while waiting for Yawn to use up her berry, but flinch luck caused me to get no more hits in and dropped him into the red.
Also his Metronome pulled Rock Polish and Twineedle against Clefairy, Frenzy Plant was not in this battle). It definitely wasn't a difficult fight, Mackenzie managed to finish it up after Harold and Nicky got a bit more health down, so I wanted to try and give that impression that this big scary battle went surprisingly well.

Got some mixed feelings from the gals on this page.

And here is my magnum opus, drawing all 8 freaking gym leaders at once oh my god. I'm so sorry Morty you got hidden behind the speech bubbles every time.

(also just to try and prevent any confusion, all of the gym leaders are able to understand their main team members, and have to have a decent understanding of at least their type specialty. So Whitney understands most Normal types, and fully understands Shortcake, Tugg, and Leah (and the rest of her true team))
