Sadly it’s not bigger on the inside, but this lovely little TARDIS is now the dominant item on my room shelves. It took me roughly two months to finish her (yeah, the Tardis is a she) because I could only work on it for a couple hours per week, but I was able to have it in time for a convention where I dressed as a fem Eleventh Doctor, and all the children loved it (the grownups too, but I was so glad to see so many little Whovians). The dimensions are about 16x16x30 cm including the roof lamp (6.2x6.2x11.7 inches).

Process:

1. I made the basic structure building a rectangular prism and a pyramid out of cardboard (that’s what I had in the moment, though using chipboard would have been better). I made some more layers to add the details of the doors and windows and the roof lamp, and everything was glued together using wood glue.

2. I wanted the structure to be solid and durable, so I covered it using papier-mâché, an air-hardening paper paste with a texture similar to modeling clay. It was easy to apply using a palette knife and a little of water to dampen it so it would turn flat and smooth.

3. I sanded it down and then painted it with white acrylic (just because I didn’t had white gesso at the moment, the gesso would have been definitely better).

4. For the blue paint, I didn’t quite liked the idea of making it a homogeneous solid blue as the one in season 5; I like the TARDIS to look old, antique and worn out. So I used three tones: cobalt, prussian and oriental blue. The Saint John Ambulance logo and the sing were printed and glued. Finally just some coats of matte varnish to protect the color.

5. Complete the look by wearing a fez, a long scarf or similar items.

Esta pequeña TARDIS de cartón y papel mâché tiene dimensiones de aproximadamente 16x16x30 cm, incluyendo la lámpara del techo; me llevó unos dos meses de trabajo porque sólo podía dedicarle un par de horas semanales. Pero la terminé a tiempo para poder llevarla a una convención (a los niños pequeños les encantó, aunque no conseguí hacerla más grande por dentro, pero me alegré infinitamente de ver tantos Whovians pequeñines).
Actualmente es el elemento central de la estantería de mi habitación :3
1. La estructura básica es un prisma unido a una pequeña pirámide, hecho de cartón de embalaje normal. Con el mismo cartón hice varias capas más para imitar los detalles de las puertas y ventanas, así como la lámpara del techo.
2. Para convertirlo en un todo sólido y resistente decidí cubrirlo con pasta de papel (papier-mâché). La pasta que compré venía ya preparada para poder aplicarse sin añadir agua, con una textura parecida a la pasta de modelar, pero resultaba complicado trabajar con ella si no se humedecía previamente, y después aparecían grietas tras secarse. Pero solo hizo falta paciencia.
3. Una vez seco, pulí un poco el acabado con una lija de grano fino antes de darle una capa de imprimación con acrílico blanco (o gesso).
4. A la hora de pintarla, preferí darle un acabado más envejecido que el azul liso que se le ha dado en las temporadas 5 a 7 de la serie. Empecé dando una capa base de azul de Prusia y azul cobalto, para luego resaltar zonas más claras con azul oriental. Lo único que no está pintado a mano es el cartel de la puerta y el pequeño logo de Saint John Ambulance, que fue impreso en papel y luego pegado con cola blanca. Finalmente le di una capa de barniz mate.

5. Para sacarla a pasear por el mundo, combínese con fez y pajarita, o bufanda multicolor, o como guste.
