Leviathan and Cattail woke up late in the den, too late to actually have breakfast. They’d slept cuddled up to each other, like usual, and nobody had dared to wake them up. Their bedding was full of mud and suspiciously had a few bugs crawling on it. Cattail groaned from under his friend’s thick blue fur.
“Duuude… This sucks ass, I’m so drowsy.” He complained, lazily stretching his limbs in front of him before flopping his muzzle into the cushions. Levi slammed her heavy tail against his back.
“Cat, wake uuuup-” She tapped his greasy mane with her paws, staring at him with mismatched eyes. “Bro, you’re really out of it, huh?” She frowned. Cattail whined in response, and followed it up with a yawn. Levi waited a while, lost in thought, before slamming her paws into Cattail’s head again, gasping. “Dude, I know! We’ll make a sick potion and that’ll cure your drowsiness! I’m literally SO smart.” The blue kit boasted, finally getting up and stretching her legs and massive tail. Cattail followed suit, seeming a bit more awake thanks to the excitement. “That’s such a cool idea! We can crush up some blue tadpoles, apparently they’re like, super energizing.” He mused, shaking many flies and droplets of swamp water out of his long, stringy mane. Levi caught a bug in her mouth and ate it. “I so wonder what they taste like. I bet they’re like… Mosquitos meet fire nettle...” She gnashed her newly acquired teeth, making her way out the door as Cattail followed. “They have to be good, otherwise they wouldn’t be bright blue.” He added scientifically, his tail slithering behind him.
They made their way through the den, sneaking around so the den mothers wouldn’t catch them and ask where they were going. If we’re being honest, even though the den mothers did want to keep them safe, they already knew trying to keep them from going to the swamp was a lost cause. Every day, they would leave in the morning, and then come back sopping wet in the evening, tracking mud everywhere and stinking up the place. It was a miracle they hadn’t gotten seriously injured yet. Soon, the pair was finally outside. They breathed in the fresh morning air. Cattail sniffed around. “This is such boring air, no spice at all.” He scrunched his nose, and Levi slammed into him with her shoulder. “Appreciate it bub, you won’t be able to smell once you’re snorting dead frog babies.” She grinned, and Cat stuck out his tongue in response. “Worm-eater.”
“You think it’s cool that I eat worms.” Levi grimaced.
“Yeahhh, I do. It’s wicked. I want to slurp up leeches one day.”
“With blood in ‘em?” Levi’s eyes widened.
“Duh!” He guffawed, making himself look big. He actually did want to eat some thick, gooey leeches. “Everything’s better when it’s juicy and slimy.” He added, eyes full of stars.
They started walking towards the swamp, and after some thinking, Levi finally found a response to her friend’s wish to eat some bloodsuckers. “Y’know, maybe we could like, get some leeches on us, and then trade? That way it doesn’t like, transmit any illnesses or whatever. And we both get to pop some gooeys.” They both laughed, and Cat threw his tail around. “Oh yeah, I love that! That’s epic!” he enthused, all giddy at the prospect of eating things he really should not be eating, ever.
After a semi-long walk, both kits ended up in the wonderful swamp they loved so dearly. The buzz of mosquitos and various other bugs filled their ears, the thick, pungent smell of mud and rotting wood permeating the air, and dirty water gathered grime around Levi and Cat’s ankles. Levi merrily rolled her fishy tail around in the swampy slop she was now standing in. “This is so the vibe.” She sighed, content. She almost seemed to want to submerge herself in the brownish water. She liked to soak up the sun and just roll around in mud. But they had a mission today, and she would not let herself get distracted by the beauties of the marsh. “Yo, Cat, where are those tadpoles at then? Still wanna look for ‘em?” She started frantically looking around in the shallow waters, sniffing at the murk. Cattail looked at her with wide eyes before responding: “Well, that dude who told me ‘bout them said they were that shiny because they eat glowing shrooms, sooo… Maybe we should check one of those stumps over there!” He pointed at a bunch of crudely chopped stumps of wood covered in fluorescent mushrooms, which sat under a huge willow tree. The wood was scratched, withered, sharp at the edges as if it had been snapped in half. Levi scoffed confidently.
“Well, that’s dangerous! I bet a Vendetta clawed those trees in half or something!” She grinned, eager, picturing the horrors that could have done damage to such tough willows. Cattail put a paw around her shoulders, smiling smugly. “Oh yeah? Maybe there’ll be some lil’ fragments in the wood then! If we pick those up, we can make magic with ‘em or something!”
“Oh wow, the den mams would absolutely hate this.” His friend responded in a dire tone, rubbing her cheek, and soiling it with mud in the process. “Let’s do it!” She chirped, worming her way out of Cattail’s grasp in order to dash towards the defaced trees. The other kit hastily followed her, yelling at her to wait for him.
Once they found themselves in front of the largest, scraggliest stub, Levi worked on catching some glowing tadpoles, while Cattail fiddled with one of the fungi sprouting from the bark. Tapping the caps released beautiful spores that almost looked like fireflies. Meanwhile, Leviathan splashed slosh everywhere, squinting at the bottom of the swamp water, trying to have one of her paw land on one of the many squirming blue figures obscured by the murk. She leaned in closer to the surface of the water, growling lightly. “Dude, I can see why you’d think these guys gave energy! They’re so damn fast!”
Cattail turned to her and gasped when he saw the sheer speed of the tadpoles. “Hold on, I think I know how to handle this. When I tried to catch those lil’ hoppy-things we used to find, I’d just, like...” He laid down in the mud, arching his forelegs and positioning them as walls which surrounded the tadpoles. “See? And then, I just make the room they’ve got smaller, and eventually you can just scoop them up!” He gloated, looking up to Levi with pride. She looked excited, wagging her tail. “This is genius, Cat! With my thumbs and your wits, we’re unstoppable!” She mused as she reached into the depths, and then raised her paws, now filled with piles of quivering blue life. “These are even brighter out of the water, wow...” She added in wonder. Cattail looked, too, and he couldn’t help but be surprised just like her. “Oh yeah, they’re even shinier than those mushrooms. How’d they manage that?” he smacked his lips. “Here, put ‘em in there.” Out of a small bag, he pulled out an empty jar, which Levi promptly opened and poured the tadpoles into.
“Hm, are they kinda losing their glow a little bit?” She observed, before shrugging. “Whatever, what else should we put into the potion?”
They both thought for a moment. Levi thought of coffee, but that was really hard to come by and also too obvious. Cat thought of leech blood, but couldn’t justify it. Maybe swamp water would be fine? But would it really be? Levi grimaced and pawed at the mud. “Erhh, think we can juice something? Like those mushrooms, maybe?” She squinted at the other kit, who shrugged and shook his head. “Mayyybe. Maybe we can find some berries to press.”
Levi nodded thoughtfully. “Den Mama Eeko once told me about which berries are poisonous and whatnot. And what ‘vitamins’ they have, whatever that is.” She groaned lightly. “Y’know though, I heard you can find lil’ black berries with weird leaves that give you thingies that you need to be like… Happy or something, I don’t know, I didn’t really get it, but it could help!” She looked around, before Cattail asked her a question. “Do they grow on bushes or like, grass?”
Levi shrugged in response, lightly rolling her eyes. “Not sure but probably bushes, right? Kinda just makes more sense.” She started walking off towards a huge shrub that seemed to bear fruit. She observed them giddily, licking the leaves and poking the berries with her fingers, trying to seem like she knew what she was doing. “Yep, definitely edible.” She assured Cattail, signing him an okay. “Don’t worry bro, if you get sick, I’ll get sick too. I’m gonna drink that potion if you drink it.” She grinned.
“I don’t think I’ll get sick! I think I’ll get super powers!” The other kit exclaimed, joining her and plucking off some of the suspicious berries with his toothless maws. Unsure where to put them, he threw them on top of the squirming beings already in the jars, which had become subtly duller. After an agreement with his best friend, he decided he might as well add some nutritious bog water so the tadpoles wouldn’t die so fast. “So how ‘bout some leaves now? Hear me out Cat, tea’s got leaves, coffee’s got leaves, plenty of energizing plants have leaves. So an energy potion would definitely have leaves in it!” Levi enthused, looking at a tree with massive, dappled fronds.
“I thought coffee had beans, not leaves?” Cat added, puzzled. Levi exhaled. “Eh, whatever, that’s just coffee. We won’t find any beans here!” She didn’t think about the fact that coffee was literally half of her argument, and Cattail didn’t think about it either: it made total sense to him. Standing on Levi’s shoulders, Cattail plucked a large leaf off the deciduous tree. He noticed that it smelled kind of fruity, and some yellow seedlings fell onto his mane, which made him sneezed. Once they’d decided the amount of ingredients they had was acceptable, they searched for a mortar and pestle they’d hidden in the swamp a little while ago. Once it had been located, Leviathan crushed and macerated everything, which amounted to a brownish, chunky sludge with hints of bright, glowing blue. It smelled like nature, but it didn’t look natural at all. “Bottoms up, babe!” Levi cheered, before chugging about a third of the potion. She suppressed a gag, before laughing loudly. “Oh dude, this tastes super funky!” She blinked a few times and put her paws on her phylactery, feeling a bit woozy. Cattail didn’t hesitate to down the rest of the concoction, before audibly gagging as well. The flavor was odd, and the texture was mostly what irked both him and Levi, but he didn’t regret drinking it. “Shit, that’s definitely something, oh man...” He buckled down and chuckled senselessly, letting his muzzle dip into the thick mud below. “Well, I sure feel different, hahaha...” He hiccuped, falling onto Levi and grinning.
“You’re so out of it bro, you should see the look on your face!” She slurred, wrapping her tail around him. “Should we get back to the den, dude?”
Cattail shook his head, his mane covering his eyes entirely. He sighed. “Yeahhh… I mean, we could definitely survive out in the wild, but...” He gagged again. “Uh, I’m hungry.”
Levi coughed a bit, her vision shifting oddly. “Oh yeah, yeah, I get you. Okay, let’s just head back home then.” She responded, accepting that one of them would probably pass out soon. She knocked over the mortar and pestle, hoping it was hidden enough that nobody would steal it. Why would anybody steal it? Whatever, they started slowly walking back to the Den, and they’d yet again track mud all over the place. In the end, they made it, but they were really sick for the rest of the day.
