The best part is when someone puts a filter on something that isn't really bloody/sexual/ideologically sensitive at all. And I click on it JUST TO FIND OUT WHAT IT IS. Then it's just some wolf with a tiny spat of blood it's fur, or an anime character in a barely sexy outfit.

Feels like I got trolled everytime...

I am in no way judging you, but this randomly has me thinking how bizarre it is that violence is more socially acceptable than sex.

Mature filters are not just for "gore" or "perverted" things. I'm not sure why that a filter implies that the image is perverted. deviantart has five tags and only one out of those tags is one about sexual themes. You mentioned that if it isn't a gore tag you wouldn't even look at it? What about the other three tags? I can understand why a person wouldn't want to see artistic nudity because while it might be non-sexual a person might feel uncomfortable with the image of a naked body.
The other two tags are for language and Ideologically Sensitive content. Starting off with the language tag, deviantart calls this tag optional. So if they wanted no one would have to tag their image with this tag. The tag is there for artist to tag it and prevent people who might not want to see language that they found offensive. This tag is completely up to the artist discretion. You might be skipping out on art you might like because the artist has chosen to put that tag there (for whatever reason). The image might not even contain anything you consider offensive. The artist simply might feel like the words "I hate you" in that context may be offensive.
Ideologically Sensitive artwork I feel can be some of the most powerful and thought provoking works I've seen. Things tagged with this simply might offend someone of the other side of the argument. Art does not just live in a box, it is influenced by the world around it. Some artwork might have ties to political or social movements and might anger the other side of people involved in the argument. Some of the most well known artist have been politically or socially influenced. There are whole schools devoted to the study of art and the social contexts it is in. This tag can contain so many different things it is hard just to say, "I would not like to see any of it."
I couldn't tell you the statics on what one of these tags is more popular but to be honest it is really the artist you follow. If you do not like an artist for always posting sexual themed image you either do not follow them or ignore when they post. It seems silly to blacklist every artist that uses a tag because it might not be gore or sexual themed artwork under that tag. Maybe the simple fact here is that you need to expand what artist you want follow and watch. There are many artist who use other tags it is just the matter of finding them.

I understand it is a personal choice if you would like to partake in these tags or not but this image implies that there are only "gore" art or "perverted" artwork under the filters, which is simply not true. This image could be considered offense to anyone else who enjoys seeing or producing artwork that falls under the other three tags. Mostly I am just sadden to see a part of the community that has this idea that tags are only for gore or sexual themes -- or have stopped trying to explore the tags because of the frequency of artist they like falling under one of those two tags.

By the way this comment was no way intended to be mean or hostile. I simply wanted to express my view on this and hope my point of view will be considered.

Wow, I completely agree with you though.

I realize that some of the artworks found under the maturity tags can be good, and it really does depend on the artist using them, I've never actually figured out what the 'Ideologically Sensitive' tag truley means, and I have no idea under what circumstances it would be used in.
With this deviation its more of a warning to my own watchers, because I have mentioned in the past how much I hate tagging my work because of the assumption it brings to most people that the only reason that filter exists is for nudity or sexual themes, I know I did, I didn't realize you could even choose why there was a maturity filter for the longest time.

It was simply supposed to be a warning to my watchers that if for some reason I ever need to use it, it probably wont be because of artistic nudes or things of the sexual nature because drawing those types of creations make me feel uncomfortable.

I suppose instead of submitting things and acting like everyone that watches me now has been watching me from the beginning, I should remember that over half of my watchers probably weren't around to even know about the previous event I was reffering to, and each new peice should be referenced and explained to make sure to get those of you who are new to watching me, or happen upon my artworks without any prior knowladge to the situation.

I do aprecicate the time it took to write your comment, I surely wasn't epecting such a long reply, usually my work doesn't get much attention at all in the area of comments however this peice seems to be a rather hot topic of conversation.

Its interesting hearing other peoples' views and I thank you again for letting me know your opinion.

Its fun reading it <3

I think ideologically sensitive things are like, concerning your religious beliefs, what you consider right and wrong, maybe if you had a picture of like, an upside down cross you would tag it as that. I can't really think of much else but I guess that makes sense, right?

filters annoy me, but i go past them as long as its not nudity and crap like that. but it annoys me still. how 9 and 10 year olds are making accounts, deviantart HAS an age limit so your risking your eyes by ignoring it! D:<

I used filters in the past but I don't anymore and I'm drawing more and more gore. I've noticed that if someone puts a filter on a piece of art then I don't look at it. I usually ignore it.

Purrlstar In reply to BlazingRiver [2012-06-16 18:37:45 +0000 UTC]

exactly, I'll only use one if its really really bad, there's plenty of people that put a filter on a peice just because it has one drop of blood in it, in all honesty some artists would use a filter for this peice right here becuase of the effects I used on the word "gore" but so far I haven't used any filters, and my plan is to never ever, but sometimes I may get too overboard and have to use one lest I face the bannhammer since it IS in the rules.

BlazingRiver In reply to Purrlstar [2012-06-16 18:44:17 +0000 UTC]

I hate it when people but a filter because of little blood. Now; if the art has like, I don't know, a head being chopped off and the screen is bloody and there's a lot of blood and what not then I can see putting a filter on it. If the art has a pool of blood then I don't think a filter is needed. I think the effects make the word "gore" looked epic and gets your point across. I can get overboard too, but I don't really upload that stuff. When I was first on dA I thought the filters had to bed used now I rarely use them. I don't mind facing the banhammer. I could've been banned or suspended by now but I haven't. XD

I have a plan to draw a character with her chest ripped open and ribs sticking out, intestines splayed across the ground and heart flung away from her body, laying on a road like roadkill.

I think that will need a filter, which is why I decided to make this drawing, as like a precurser to I'll possibly blow some minds with decapitiation, ribcage destructure, and cannibalistic monsters.

Purrlstar In reply to Rebelliousfruitsalad [2012-06-16 18:27:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, so far I haven't used any mature filters, I really don't like them because it prevents you from seeing the thumbnail, which is like the most important thing to the picture, it decides if the person is going to view the artwork or not.

I notice I usually skip over them because I hate going to the page to see if its a gore filter or not, if its not one for gore then I wont even look, so I've gotten to a point where I wont even try to look at the artwork anymore if it has a filter.

I hope to never have to use them, but sometimes I have a rather grotesque mind, and I can draw nasty organs and other things very well, but there may come a time when it'll be just a tiny bit too nasty for some people and I'll end up having to use a filter.

That's what this piece is for ;3

I see, well It has been a while since I haven't posted a gore drawing... But when I did, not alot of people wanted to see it and/or comment, now I know why :T
I guess in my future posts I won't put on mature filter

But now I remember how fun is it to draw gore >w<
But I'm against sexuality in Deviantart, I know alot of people don't care, but I'm a clean furry and I don't like to see other anthro artists posting Sexual content like if it was normal, it gives us furries a very bad reputation, wich lowers our confidence in the public...
oh and lets just not talk about those fat fetishes shit like that...
