  Phoenix is part of an alien species that comes from another planet completely inhabited by flame cats, They have yet to be classified with an official species name, though in build and undercoat they bare a striking resemblance to panthers. The flaming markings on his coat are actually on fire, and the intensity of them varies enough so that the markings are never exactly the same shape, though close to the same location. The fire is caused by an ever-burning oil that leeches from certain patches of his skin, and ignites on contact with air. The wings are also created via this method, but they're controlled through specific glands around the shoulder blades designed to convert energy from food and the ever burning oil into a gas which is essentially lighter fluid. The glands not only make this fuel, but they allow his species to unleash the gas into the air whenever they want, it then ignites from the open flames of their markings, and forms the wing-shaped flames you often see phoenix displaying.

Because the gas is something he controls, Phoenix is able to make his wings larger and smaller at will, or have none at all. Flight is possible with these wings, but it takes much more effort on earth than it did on his home planet. Because of this he often gets tired out, and must take breaks to ensure he won't crash land mid-flight due to insufficient fuel...

  Phoenix is very analytical, he's strong and sticks to his rules and morals as much as possible, he's loyal to anyone that gas proven themselves to him as an ally, and would never do anything to break that oath.
To be completely honest, Phoenix himself is a bit of a generic character. However, I made him such a long time ago I'm not entirely sure what his personality even IS, but I know he has one, because I can maintain it very well when I'm writing him. (if anything, I'd say he's a male version of myself)
.:STORY:.
  Phoenix's story is a complicated one, I made it up a long time ago and it needs a bit of work, but here's a short summery without too many spoilers: Phoenix is a bit of an oddball, a slight mix of natural and elemental markings caused a bit of a conflict on his home planet, but not enough for anyone to ever hate him for it. However, due to false accusations phoenix was banished from his home planet and sent to earth in a comet, he crash landed and was taken prisoner by scientists and had to figure out a way to break free. He did so diligently and effectively, and now roams earth all by himself.

  However, Phoenix also takes place in two alternate stories to his own personal one. The first and most important being Purrl's mind. Phoenix is the second most important character (the first being Purrl) in her own world. He's her right wing, her support, her best friend, and the leader of the world while she's away. He's her favorite character, she trusts him the most, and wouldn't give him up for anything. Because of this, he's often depicted in many places he's not “supposed” to be, as his regular story is quite depressing as an alien who roams a planet he's not supposed to be on, here he's the king of a land he originated from.

  The third story that Phoenix is a part of, is Bloodgems. However, he does not exist in this story in his current form, and Human Phoenix and Regular Phoenix are NOT the same character by any means, they just share a personality and name, other than that the circumstances of the entire story and everything that happens within are different enough that Purrl considers human phoenix an entirely separate character to the usual, unlike Cody who is both anthro and human at the same time, and only has an anthro form due to Purrl's inability to draw humans to her perfectionist desire.

To make things simpler to understand, Human Phoenix and Regular Phoenix can be cannonly depicted in the same drawing together, while Human Cody and Anthro Cody cannot.

Phoenix was originally a neopet! (shhhhh!)

I got inspiration for his story by watching a doccumentory on the sun, on the Discovery Channel

Phoenix is probably the 2nd character I've ever taken seriously back when I made them, I love him more than anything!
