And Here's The Juicy Part

---------

Preface: due to Mareanie’s aggressive disposition, most of these breeds are already difficult to find in the wild. Nonetheless, at least one of each specimen presented has been recorded and studied, and captured if deemed necessary.

Pearl (+Clamperl): curiously, it hatches without a shell of its own. It scours the bottom of the ocean for shells discarded by Clamperl after evolution or, if presented with the opportunity, killing and devouring Clamperl for both nutrition and shelter.

Lilypad (+Lotad): of a calmer demeanor than the standard Mareanie, but still relatively ornery. Its spikes have flattened and, when held together, can be used to keep water within. With it, it can keep itself hydrated long enough to reach another body of water, or till rain falls.

Water Strider (+Surskit): with the added agility, it’s able to chase prey at breakneck speeds. Due to the trade-off of speed for power, its arms do not have the deadly force as the standard Mareanie, thankfully preventing it from de-populating entire lakes with its hunger.

Pagliacci (+Popplio): a breed found only once in the wild, and later investigation revealed it to have been left behind by an unscrupulous trainer who did not wish to pay the egg hand-off fee. Even with no socialization, it shows a friendly disposition and a desire to entertain, though its trademark hunger is equal to the rest of its kind.

Dead Coral (+Corsola): with its uncanny camouflage, it is the most successful hunter of the Mareanie family. It lays completely still for days on end till Corsola foolishly approach it, and perhaps even settle at its side, at which point it strikes. On the other hand, other Mareanie may confuse it for prey, and fierce conflict ensues. Extremely rare in the wild, for obvious reasons, and its breeding strictly banned due to the high stress and danger Corsola must be put through for a coupling to happen; only Dead Coral Mareanies are allowed to mate, resulting in acceptable but less beautiful individuals. This lead to a rise of illegal poaching and breeding of Dead Coral Mareanies, which was promptly squashed in the Alola region, but sadly continues in other parts of the world.

Tattered (+Feebas): the result of a breeding between a Mareanie and a Milotic by a breeder who foolishly hoped for genetics to work completely against every book and tip given to them by their co-workers. Instead of carrying the beauty of its Milotic father, it hatched with the ugliness of Feebas. While some may be put off by its appearance, it’s one of the very few Mareanie that will accept a plant-based diet, happily munching down on algae and un-aquatic plants alike.

Guts (+Pyukumuku): it holds its body off the ground with its thick arms, making sure never to hold its weight on its sensitive innards. Replacing its stinger is a protective cap, holding acid-coated insides until it requires to defend itself or catch unsuspecting prey. Curiously, it prefers to spend its time on the beach, returning to the sea only once the sun has almost de-hydrated it to a crisp.

Lemurian (+Dratini; hypothetical): found only in the wild, and only at a specific undersea volcano several hundred miles off the coast of Alola. It was discovered only thanks to one floating up to the surface and being caught by a sailor on a ship passing by. The Mareanie disappeared under mysterious circumstances before they reached the coast, so for years it was thought to be merely the tales of drunken sailors, then moving on to legend. It was only a few years recently that an exploratory vessel made with the breed. Every specimen recovered never makes it to Alolan waters before it’s gone, and any attempts at breeding Mareanie and Dratini result only in standard Mareanie with similar hue as its Dragon parent but without the orb on the top of its head.

Spiral (+Omanyte): unlike Pearl Mareanie, it hatches with a soft shell, which quickly solidifies after contact with the air. While it fights upright, it flips itself upside-down for locomotion, and any Pokemon unlucky enough to run into it in this state finds itself quickly engulfed by arms pressing it against its poisonous barb.

Lure (+Slowpoke): the most docile of Mareanie, it will allow other Pokemon to happily chew on the sweet-oozing tips of its arms. The lull lasts only so long, though; once enough prey has been accumulated, or once it grows too hungry to keep waiting, it will viciously smash the unlucky chosen against its poisonous spike and, while still attached to its arm, feed on it.

It can usually evolve only with the help of a human, or by launching itself into a Shellder nest. Once there’s a Shellder attached to every appendage, Lure Mareanies overgoes evolution much like a Slowbro. Now in a symbiotic union with as many as ten Shellder, its spike turns into a psychic focus, keeping all eleven brains working in unison. Instead of its spike, it uses the transformed Shellder to inject poison into its enemies and mercilessly batter them with the hardened shells, then feasts on the remains.

Nephilim (+Alomomola): despite numerous studies indicating its intentions are strictly benevolent and its healing capabilities even more potent than that of a Chansey, none have been registered as Pokemon Center helpers or rehabilitation Pokemon. This is due to mainstream opinion considering them “unnerving” at best, and “f***ing freaky pieces of s**t” at worst, according to surveys. Nephilim Mareanie’s habit of latching onto its patient and not letting go until it is fully healed also adds to the public’s disdain towards the breed.

I'm glad you think so! :3

One of my friends named his Popplio Pagliacci and I loved it too much not to use it.
