They're just lazy beans who like to eat.
I'd consider them a closed species, but I might make adopts for them if there's any interest. I don't really want to make any groups for them, since I'd rather let people sort of have free range with them personality and story-wise, if they have them.

Some info I will add though:
There are two main varieties: ground-based and ocean-based. In other words, they can live out of water, or in water, and in some rare cases, in both.
They're very sluggish and lazy, and prefer to live in places where food is easily accessible to minimize the amount of moving they have to do to eat. They prefer sweet things, and are mainly herbivores in nature - though there are some very rare cases where they will turn omnivorous if resources are scarce.
When they find a mate, it's for life, and they're rarely apart from them.
They are totally harmless (mostly...).
If under extreme hunger, their "mouths" can tend to bite people, mostly out of reflex.
Their intelligence ranges from totally oblivious to the intelligence of a toddler.
