I’d been really upset when my parents told me we were moving halfway across the country for my dad’s new job. Who wouldn’t be? I was going to have to start all over at the bottom of the high school popularity totem pole, and it had taken me a long time to make the friends I did have. Sure, I’d be able to still text them and stuff, but it wouldn’t be the same. My parents were sympathetic, but the new position paid substantially better than the one he’d had before. We were moving, and that was that.

Moving day came and went, and we arrived in the new town. Sure enough, I struggled to find my footing socially. The classes were easy enough, but I simply couldn’t seem to connect with any of my classmates. It was for that reason that I, bored and lonely, wandered my way through the local mall one afternoon.

I’d raised a dubious eyebrow at the rather gaudy sign. It read “Wishing Booth: Five Dollars to Make Your Wishes Come True” and seemed to be tucked away towards the back end of the mall. I hadn’t seen anyone else go in there, and clearly it had to be a scam, but honestly what did I gave to lose? If nothing else it might be a fun way to spend some time.

The old lady inside the booth listened to me talk about my social life—or lack there of—for a couple minutes after I’d handed her the five. “Hmm....” she said, “So you wish to be popular, is that is?” I smiled and nodded. If five dollars at the local mall could solve the mystery of how to be popular, well, that was five dollars well spent.....not that I actually expected anything to happen.

She nodded and then told me to stare into this big wall mirror she had propped up across the table from my while the Magic got to work. I’d half been expecting a crystal ball or some other cliche, so I supposed that was a nice touch. With a suppressed chuckle I did as I was told. It was funny—I’d thought she’d hit a secret button or something with the lights, because the whole place seemed to be....glowing. I was almost transfixed as I stated into the mirror...and my body changed.

I don’t know how much longer I’d been staring at nothing when she brought me out of it with a snap of her fingers. “So, Nikki.....how do you like your new look?” She asked. Nikki? What? My name was Nick, not.....my response was cut off as I stared into the mirror in shock.

My brown hair had lightened, becoming long and blonde, and had cascaded down to my shoulders. My face—and my entire body, for that matter—had become feminine—makeup and lipstick had somehow applied themselves on my face(rather well, a part of my brain noted) and shiny diamond earrings shimmered in the shop’s light. My chest had pressed outwards as I’d gained new feminine features—my body was certainly a hundred percent female. My clothing had become feminine as well—a ruffled top, skirt and heels. In short, “Nikki” was now much more of a fitting name than Nick.

My jaw dropped as I continued to stare in disbelief into the mirror. This girl couldn’t be me....could it? The woman smiled again. “You wanted to know how to be popular.....and I think you’ll find as the new girl in town you’ve got more than your fair share of admirers Nikki. Now, enjoy your new life!”

“Wait, I—“ I started to say, only for the woman to snap her fingers. There was another brilliant flash of light, and I felt my mind begin to change.....

I blinked repeatedly as I came to, standing in the center of the mall. How long was I daydreaming for anyway? That was a really weird one too, I’d never had a day dream about being a guy before. Oh well, I’d better hurry up before I had to go meet up with my friends. We had some serious shopping to do before cheerleading practice later after all. Still, a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do. I laughed to myself. It really was tough being popular sometimes....but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
