Description
The "gold rush" to Mars once it was discovered to have also succumbed to spontaneous natural terraforming was fast and fierce, with corporate media hailing it as "Earth 2" or a "True Fresh Start". Oligarchs, executives and titans of tech and industry had hoped to escape the new woes of Earth and return to the old ways on the red planet. But as new colonies started spreading across the surface of Mars, news of some encampments suddenly being wiped out brought a new horrific realization: This dead planet made new had a Great Beast of its own. Four colonies, thousands of lives and billions of dollars were lost before the settlers learned the monster's patterns and behavior well enough to know where to build and where to stay away at all costs, forced to adapt to the same conservational methods that Earth inhabitants had in order to coexist with the Great Beasts. For the people of Mars, there was no escaping the troubles of Earth after all.

To make matters worse, colonists came into contact with intelligent alien life for the first time: The Atavi were dangerous and territorial, and it was only by the chance that they happened to be in a pre-industrial stage of civilization that they did not have the firepower to drive the colonists away from Mars for good, forcing uneasy treaties to reduce bloodshed on both sides.

What should have been one of the greatest discoveries and embarkments of mankind soured with the fight for territory on Mars, an endeavor already spoiled in the minds of high ranking colonizers as the Great Beast Carcarrion and the conflicts with the Atavi necessitated the arrival and presence of ENU and ADAPT infrastructure. Mars had become a second Earth in the ways these elite did not want. Disillusioned, these elite viewed Mars as a "lost cause", and much of their financial backing was pulled to instead focus on moon and asteroid colonies in Jupiter and beyond, far from governments, Great Beasts, and (hopefully) aliens.
