Courtney awoke to the sound of the summer huts door creaking open and closed. A smile dawned her features as she recognised the familiar shoes stepping along the floorboards and towards the kitchen.

She sat up, turning her head and glancing at her reflection in the mirror across the room, running her fingers through her hair. She'd waited an hour for Duncan to return to their little vacation home. Courtney had spent the afternoon making the two of them a little romantic tea in the tiny dining room just in front of the window which showed the lovely sunset sparkling on the ocean. Where they would talk about their future as husband and wife. She glanced down at the engagement ring Duncan had used to propose with, giggling at how silly he looked on one knee in the middle of town.

As she slid off the bed, she heard Duncan call out, “Court? Yo, Princess, you here?”

Courtney rolled her eyes. Where wouldn't I be? She thought playfully. She was about to open her mouth to speak, but Duncan had beaten her to it. “See, she's out.”

“Good.” Another voice said, not deep another to be another man's voice.

Courtney's brows furrowed in confusion as she came to stand at the door and slid it open, peering out into the hall. Had Duncan brought someone over? Impossible, this was meant to be their weekend alone. She tip-toed down the hall and peeped her head around the corner, glancing into the kitchen where Duncan stood.

Courtney found herself more shocked. Gwen? Gwen stood in front of Duncan, her arms crossed and her expression concerned. “Duncan, you need to tell her. I mean, this is getting too far. She's really happy.”

Duncan sighed, loudly. “I'll tell her later, I just need the right moment. I promise.” he assured.

Gwen sighed, turning her head away and staring at the floor. “We shouldn't be doing this.” she said, flatly.

Courtney's stomach began to turn, What are they talking about? She bit her lip with worry as she listened to the pair, her fears growing with each sentence.

Duncan turned Gwen back to face him and chuckled. “Come on, Gwen. I told you, there's no one I'd rather be with them you.”

Gwen frowned, her nose scrunching in thought. “But what about Courtney? Won't she get mad?”

“She'll cool off eventually. Forget her.” he leaned and placed his lips against hers.

Courtney's heart dropped and her mind raced as Gwen kissed back, both had equal amounts of passion and love.

Courtney could feel a hot sensation on her face and a wetness beading at the corners of her eyes. Turning away from the act of betrayal, she run down the hall and wrenched the back door open, making it as loud as possible that the two could hear. She hoped they heard her, she wanted them to know what she'd seen and heard.

She dashed out the back door, running around the summer hut and onto the beach, alerting a her small pet which had been sleeping fitfully in it's basket on the porch, before it came running down towards her, following her with concern for it's owner.

As Courtney ran; she couldn't help but to cry, the tears that leaked down her face was of regret. If she'd known Duncan would do this, she would have never said yes to his proposal. She would have never let Gwen hang out with Duncan if she knew this would happen.

She thought they were passed this. The teenage drama they had endured. All the looks, all the motions and the way they spoke to each other, Courtney should have known they were doing this behind her back long ago. She trusted them, how could they do this to her?

She ripped the engagement ring from her finger and threw it into the ocean, she had long since passed left the view of the summer home and now she had collapsed in the sand. Screaming out her regret and sorrow until her throat became raw. She could have fallen into one thousand thorns and she still wouldn't have screamed as much as she was right now. She screamed her frustration until it hurt and she could scream no more.

The tamed raccoon nuzzled her side, hopping up onto her lap to comfort her. She stroked it's head as she ran out of tears. The pain was unbearable.

As she watched the tide draw in, she thought to herself. She hoped they enjoyed that kiss as much as they would losing a wife and a friend.
