From a book series I rather liked as a kid. Planning a series of these.Gorl was the worst guardian, but that was kind of to be expected.

I dont know why, but I've always thought that Gorl wasn't truly evil, just blinded. If Lief and companions could've convinced him, he would've made a powerful ally. Then again, he was already dead, so I guess that idea could be thrown out

Well he didn't exactly get a lot of time to develop. Forests Of Silence was mostly about establishing what was going on for the main characters, with Gorl thrown in as an afterthought almost, so plenty of room for interpretation.
That said, they weren't going to convince him, given the reason he was still "alive" was supposedly his willpower or something. Not the kind of individual who would change their mind easily.
