Description
Davey. A simple name for a simple boy. Yet his life wasn't as simple as it should have been. We live in a world where the unexpected is what usually occurs. But if this is so, how can anything be unexpected? For we are always expecting the unexpected to appear before us and dazzle us with its charm. Well, Davey certaintly was dazzling. His parents, Lilian and Leon Hasslet, were married before they left high school. They had been together since kindergarten and belonged together. If ever there was a God he did create these two from the same being. They were perfect together. Their parents encouraged their relationship all through their lives. Yet because they never knew anything other than each other, was their togetherness really all that perfect?
When Davey came along, he was gladly received. Lilian was ecstatic and Leon felt blessed beyond relief. Davey's childhood was a normal one. He went to school and made friends. He wasn't popular but he wasn't an outcast. He got along with most kids and teachers thought he was a wonderful student. He sat quietly in class and did his work. He played kindly with the other children. His parents waited to see him find his life partner, but kindergarten came and went, as did grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, grade 4... No sign of even a best friend. Lilian and Leon were worried about their son by this point. You see, though the two had seen their friends go out with more than one person or just not at all, they never suspected their son would be the same. They figured he'd be like them and find his soulmate his first day of kindergarten. Today is Davey's first day of high school and he's shown no intrest at all in any girl he knows. And he knows a lot.
Brushing a stray strand of black bang out of his face, Davey Hasslet let out a long breath and closed his eyes against the harsh rays of first light. Squinting against the glares, he threw out both of his arms and contorted his body into a misshappened shape. After a moment, he let his body relax once more and yawned. Sitting up in his bed, he gazed around his room. It was emptier than most teenaged boys rooms would be. Missing from his whitewash walls were posters of bands or artists that he enjoyed the most. Pictures of girls in bikini's, towels, and in some cases, nothing at all. There were no objects scattered on his floor, there was only carpet. As he threw the covers off his bed and lowered his barefeet, he realized how empty his room truly was. The echo of his footfalls shattered his thoughts as he yawned again and walked out of his abnormal room, down the hall a few feet, and into the bathroom.
Stepping into the shower, Davey turned on the tap and felt the warm water bounce off of his smooth skin. He felt each drop hit him then explode into even tinier droplets and spread around on his skin like small harmless bombs. Bombs, he thought as images of war clouded his mind. Gernades. Bringers of death and destruction. Nothing can escape them. Just as no part of his body faced with the water could escape getting wet. Davey shook his head as his hair became soaked with water then started to cleanse himself of the previous days filth.
When he stepped out of the porcelin chamber, Davey grabbed a towel and wrapped himself in it. He walked to the mirror and moved a hand over the steam. He stared carfully at the face staring back at him.
Dark eyes glared myniacally. Looking closer you can see the hallucinations bubbling just beneath the surface. The psychotic envy and rage boiling unnaturally was hidden beneath a choclate coating. Smooth and rich but easily melted away. A small nose connected one pot of abnormalacy to the other. Underneath it, his lips sat still. Never moving once no matter how much a smile wanted to break its surface. The two fought hard to break the other, but in the end the unmoving word mutterer won, leaving the small gesture of welcoming to cower in a corner until needed once more to fool the world.
Dark, thin curls framed this structured but thin cavern. Twirling and dancing from the top of the scalp, around the ears, and ending what seems like a foot from broad shoulders. Weaving and intertwining between each other until their ubrupt stop, almost all on the same level. A slight shake of the head and every single one was put out of place. Even still, each and everyone helped to cover the dark thoughts brewing in an even darker mind.
Davey stared blankly as the steam covered the demonic reflection once more before turning and walking out of the suffocating room. Retracing previous steps, Davey looked for the path that should be worn into the hardwood floor by now. His entire life he had traced this same path numerous times a week, there should be at least a small dent by now. And yet still there was nothing. Shrugging unceremoniously, the young man walked into his room and over to one of the few items covering any part of it. An old wooden armoir decorated with intricate designs opened welcomingly at Davey's touch. He pulled back the silent door and reached in to grasp one of the many shirts that littered the packed wooden monstrosity. A grey muscle shirt found its way to the fingers of the searching hand and was immediately stretched over taught skin, leaving nothing to the imagination. An old pair of blue jeans met the same unfortunate fate as it was pulled over a pair of boxers. The socks were last and suffered a much worse fate than the boxers, jeans and muscle shirt combined.
Finally clothed, Davey walked out of his room, shutting the door behind him so as not to let normalcy clutter his sacred place. And to the unknown viewer, to keep his insanity locked neatly inside. He walked delibritly to the bathroom door and hung the used towel on the door knob where his young mother would later discover it and dispose of it in the great white monster of a machine in the basement. Without missing a beat, the young man toured through his home, stepping lightly on each stair as he took another step away from his reality and back into the socially acceptable world we call life. Hitting the bottom step regrettingly, a voice called out to him, the hissing whipser condemning him to secrecy.
“Your mother thinks you still in bed,” the sound screamed through his head and Davey fell to the floor, missing the last step and falling face first to come crashing down on his own tortured pride. “Here she comes now, you'd better look presentable.”
Standing up quickly, the young man cringed as he noticed his mother already walking from the kitched into the hallway where he had just been lying. Her pained look confirmed his fears and he felt the need to explain.
“I'm fine mother, just slipped is all,” he shrugged it off and she tried to hide her expression. Little does she know that nothing can escape the otherwordly.
“She's going to ask you soon you know. Why do you keep putting it off?” It sounded like nails on a chalkboard as the voices combined and screeched through the tortured mind of the 17 year old boy. Grinding his teeth tightly together, Davey managed to keep his loose composure in check another day and got past his mother without further questioning.
She passed him his breakfast and sat across from him to attack her own. Leon having already left for work, this gave mother and son alone time every morning to discuss whatever was on the mind. These conversations sometimes lasted hours varying in context from the weather to the latest political battle.
“Well you better head off to school then,” Lilian reached out and grabbed her own and her sons dirty dishes and stood to walk to the sink and turn the tap to destroy any left over foor or crumbs. “ It's closing in on 7:45 now,” she smiled and it radiated a glow so bright Davey could do nothing else but smile back. His mother was such a wonderful woman with a heart of pure gold. It hurt him inside that he couldn't care less about her, but this was just another inconvienience in his misguided life. Nothing to do about that but leave her to her own devices.
“Thanks for breakfast mom, it was great,” the automated answer came with a grin. Davey stood up and planted a small kiss upon his mother's lush cheek. Grabbing his bag and throwing the strap over his should, Davey wished his mother a wonderful day, as he did every morning, and walked out into the fresh air of a new day.
Davey walked out to the garage and up to his beautiful 9/11 Turbo. It's sleek, black exterior rushed through the world escaping all but attention in the school parking lot. Though who wouldn't splurge a little when your family is so well off? Though it is a shame Davey's mind isn't as well off as his fathers bank account.
Exiting his undenyably wonderful ride, Davey closed the door with an uncaring grunt and threw his backpack over his shoulder once more. Walking with his head down, hand in pocket, Davey made his way through the groups of other students. Plastering his usual smile upon his handsome face as he waved at all who knew him. A couple of girls ran up to Davey before he could reach the school entrance.
"Davey! Davey!" The shrill voice of a ninth grader resounded through the parking lot. "Davey, wait up!"
Jumping up to wrap her arms around the unmoved teenager was a small blonde girl with eyes that would shame the deep sea. The petite female had an unusual grin upon her face and Davey quickly took note of this.
"Hold on Karine," he laughed and wrapped an arm around the girl. Davey lifted her up and easily swung her in a circle before placing her safely back on the ground in front of him. Though being anywhere near this particular boy isn't really that safe...
"Davey, Davey, guess what happened to ME last night!" By now the blonde was jumping up and down spastically. "Guess, guess, guess, guess, GUESS!!!!!!"
Internally, Davey rolled his eyes and sighed. Trying to keep his dark thoughts in control, externally, Davey smiled polietly and placed a finger on his bottom lip. Gazing upward, he thought.
"Hmmmm," he looked down at Karine and studied her. "Well, I'd have to say that your date last night went just as you expected. And you and Tom are now dating. Am I right?"
Karine's smile faded and a pout formed on her lips. "Hmph," she folded her arms and turned away from Davey. "How come your always ruining my fun Davey Hasslet?"
The laugh that escaped came deep from within Davey. It was almost monstorous and would have been had there not been so many other noises around to block out the ferosity of it.
'If only you knew, little one...,' Davey thought.
"What can I say Karine. I wake up and come to school everyday, thinking all the while, 'I wonder when Karine will find me today so I can spoil all of her fun of trying to tell me things that are quite easy to guess'."
Karine turned on Davey. "It's not very nice you know!" Karine stepped back from Davey and a dreamy look came over her. "Anyways, none of that matters," her hands clenched into fists and she brought them up to rest her chins on them. With a faraway look in her eyes she spoke again. "All that matters now is me and Tom," Karine closed her eyes and Davey laughed as a small sigh escaped her.
"Alright Karine. You go find him then would you and let me get off to my locker. There are more things I have to do before class you know."
Davey started to walk away but was stopped as two small arms wrapped around his neck.
"But Daaaaaaavvvvveeeeeeeyyyyyyy!" Karine's whine was so annoying that it took all of Davey's self control not to turn around and throw her in the trash can. But keeping up to his reputaion, he waited until she let go of him then turned around and bent down to her level.
"Come on K. You can call me tonight with the details, alright?"
Another pouting look formed on Karine's face but she nodded.
"Alright," Davey ruffled her hair then turned and started walking again. "Bye Karine!" He raised a hand and continued walking.
Just as one of Davey's perfect hands wrapped around the door handle, he was bombarded by another girl.
"Davey Hasslet, you come here right this instant!"
Turning, Davey came face to face with another sight for sore eyes. This one was cute, medium height, shoulder length brown hair, brown eyes, and a full lipped smile that could melt your heart. Yes, this one was a package. Besides beauty, she had brains as well. Her kind hearted soul was troubled by a tormenting past, but that's a story for another time.
"Davey, why didn't you call last night? You said you'd call me at nine and you never called. Why didn't you call?"
Davey sighed and looked down. When he looked up again, he had the sorriest look on his face, he could have made a puppy cry.
"Amber, I'm sorry. I completly forgot! How could I be so stupid," avoiding eye contact and looking at the ground, he continued his perfect act. "How could I ever foget someone as beautiful and intelligent as you!" He reached a hand towards her. Being completly charmed by her lab partner, she reached out to him. Just before their hands met, Davey looked away, letting his hand drop to his side. "Oh Amber. Can you ever forgive me?"
Great big chocolate covered eyes begged forgivness of the 16 year old hottie and falling easily into them, she started to cry.
"Oh Davey, it's okay. I'm sure you got all your work done anyways. I know I don't have to worry about you. Oh Davey!"
Davey walked to her and wrapped his arms gently around her shaking body. "It's okay Amber. And yes, of course I finished my half of the assignment."
Davey patted Amber's back gently before she pulled away from him and wiped her eyes.
"Sorry 'bout that," she quickly recovered herself and took a step back from the hunky man in front of her. "Alright well I'd better be off. Things to do before the bell, right?"
Davey nodded. "Catch you in class Amber!" Davey turned and waved back as Amber disappeared into the crowd.
"Wow, busy morning, huh?" The voices sighed deeply. "Well, what would you expect when your Davey Hasslet. The hottest, smartest boy in school, hmmmmmm? Teachers love you, girls love you, boys want to be you, and weellllll... You get the picture," the voices laughed. "What are we saying? You ARE DAvey Hasslet. You already know all of this! And more... Don't you Dave-"
"DAVEY!"
"Will it never end," Davey whispered under his breath, then braced himself and turned. Down the hall, walking towards him was a thin boy, barely a frame, with thick-rimmed glasses and skinny jeans. One of the many 'emo' kids in school, Zak seemed to have a peculiar fondness with Davey...
"Hey hunny. How you doing this fine, lovely, romantic," he pasued here to look Davey in the eyes and wink, "...morning."
"Hey Zachary," the emo boy clearly cringed and Davey smiled widely on the inside. He hated it when Davey used his full name.
"So babe, I was wondering," Zak paused then placed a hand on Davey's chest and moved closer to him. "If you wanted to come with me to the movies tonight. Or we could have a study date. My house, say 7?"
Davey gently grabbed Zak's hand and pushed it away from him.
"Sorry Zachary, but I have to go home and study. You know how it is," in truth, Zak had no idea how it was. He bullshitted his way through life and the only reason he actually came to school on a regular bases anymore was to see Davey and hit on him as much as possible in the shortest time possible.
"Alright then I'll meet you at your car after school. Alright? Yes, okay bye baby!"
Before Davey had a chance to say anything, Zak had blown him a kiss and turned running down the hall.
Davey hung his head and sighed.
"Well, that was certainly interesting."
The voice came from behind Davey. Turning around, Davey saw something he thought he never would. He saw...
