I'd imagine there's a type of metal that can resist highest of heat.

you'd think, but there are metals that can handle really high heat, like titanium or tungsten, but the all melt eventually

something like diamond would be better

Ah, yes. I forgot about carbon, such as diamond. That can pretty much work well.
