Description
The image area was masked off into three sections using artist's tape. Linear elements were defined using light pencil strokes, then refined and darkened using rapidoliner pen with india ink. A single watercolor (prussian blue) was chosen, and the whole area was covered using a wash, with table salt applied to the surface in small sections to achieve the "starred spots" variation in color. Drying between layers with a hair drier, successive amounts of watercolor were applied, and the finishing highlights were applied (also in many layers) using white gouache. The finished work was cut into three sections so that the pieces of the triptych could be framed separately, and sealed using workable fixative to prevent smudging or damage. The three sections were scanned separately, then composited in photoshop for display online.Related content

Oh, I like this one!Beautiful!
It's an organic, mecanic universe like thing!I feel like floating in space to some distant planets or structures.
Love the blue and the way you used the wet-in-ewet and dry paint technique.

Thanks! An experiment in water color and salt, yeah baby. I love the starlike crystaline patterns the salt makes when you use it to soak up extra pigment and water...

The amount of depth in this is amazing and I love the monochrome blue.. all the little effects are dazzling, wonderful work. Pieces like this are why I love abstract!

Wow, that is stunning! I've never seen anyone work that amazingly well with watercolors... you're my new worship for those! This is just... wow... and the most beautiful color, too, you could have chosen
About how big are each of them? I can't even decide if, to my eye, they'd be large or small...

The original watercolor block was 12" x 16", so divide that in three along the 16" dimension...
And thank you, I'm glad you like it. I spent an entire semester at Otis College of Art & Design in a class where all we did was work with gouache (opaque watercolor) so I've got some good teachers to thank for learnin me good-like

Yeah, it's a shame I don't own a set. But I did buy watercolour pencils recently.

Those can be fun! Have you tried them out yet? The only way I've found to get real watercolor-like effects from the ones I have is to wet/dampen the paper *first*... when I tried to blend them after they were already applied it didn't work quite as well. But if you put them down wet, you get nice fun smeary-ness.

! I have done stuff like that.. I'm still looking for good techniques so I can actually learn how to use them properly but.. one thing I love is how bright the colours are when they're wet

So cool, but you know that. You'll have to show me how to do this sometime, I absolutely adore watercolors.
