Description Renee was asleep again, but this wasn’t the drained sleep she had been in for the last couple of weeks. This was natural, real sleep that made her seem almost angelic in the dark. Nos was hungry but couldn’t stand to wake and bite her now. She was enjoying some real rest for now. He sat in the broken window, feeling the nighttime breeze on his back. There was something wrong with his little pet; that was becoming evident.
The way she had perked up with the new battery… he knew he shouldn’t worry but couldn’t help himself. Maybe she was glad to see through her robotic eye again; maybe she was glad to have some real energy running through her implants, he wasn’t sure. What he did know was this- the nanites could have their effects on organics and robots alike. Just look at how XR had been- the annoying little one had sprouted fangs for goodness sakes. Ranger Parsec, thanks to the nanites reacting to the radioactivity, had transformed into the cyber monster known as wirewolf. So what was happening to Renee?
He had bitten her several times. He had released thousands of nanites into her system each time and left them to multiply for days on end. He thought about how little she had eaten in the time after he had bitten her first and pulled at the collar of his cape. If something went to awfully wrong with her she may not be able to feed on her anymore or, worse, would accidentally kill her the next time. He would also have to take new measures to insure her safety.
If she was mutating, which he expected was happening, he would stop feeding on her until something could be done. The last thing he wanted was to bite into his own technical flesh and blood. Dear God this was so frustrating. Nos-4-a2 ran his claws across the wooden windowsill, tearing deep scratches into it. All he wanted was to get his ship together and fly away from this dead end Capital Planet. But now he had her to take care of.
She was, he would admit, the most willing slave he had ever had. She showed no signs of turning on him and was fairly tolerant of his needs as an energy vampire, no matter how painful it got. The girl wasn’t even new to it at this point- she had been totally willing before, as a solid organic impervious to his power but weak to his charms. He chuckled at the memory of how bossy she had been, practically holding him hostage in the theatre. Renee had her affections for Nos-4-a2, yes, but now she was outgrowing them. The vampire wondered who she was struck on, if anyone, at the moment.
Nos kind of pushed it all back, tired. He left the windowsill and stopped by the couch for a second and ruffled Renee’s hair, petting her ears back. She purred happily in her sleep and adjusted on the creaky couch. Moonlight seeped through the windows and gave her fur a silvery glow, illuminating the room. He smiled again, admittedly a little crooked, and mumbled. “I cannot guarantee your safety, but I will be responsible for your fate.” He ran a finger under her chin and let go, roosting in a corner for the night.

Alan’s ear twitched and he sat down beside Ginger on the couch. She was trying to smile and not doing a very good job of it. “Ginger, I’ve still got to go back to Star Command and you know that.” He frowned at his wife. Her reddish fur glinted in the dark. She had gotten up from bed, restless, and fixed herself a cup of coffee. The Zephyrite had come in after feeling the emptiness on her side of the bed and caught her in here alone.
“But it’s not fair!” Ginger buried her face in his shoulder. “They chased her off and dancing back into his arms.”
He patted her shoulder and rubbed it comfortingly. “Oh no, dear, it’s not like that…”
“Well it sounds an awful lot like that!” The woman’s normally very calm and diplomatic attitude had shattered. She looked at him, fire in her grey eyes. More tears welled up in her eyes. She couldn’t stand to let anyone see her cry, and dug into his shoulder again.
“We can’t let this destroy our lives.” He kissed her on top of the head. His leave would end in three days, and then he would go back and finish training. Ginger opposed it greatly, but he felt like it was right.
“I know, but…” Her argument dissipated. He hugged up against her.
“They’re looking for him, don’t worry.” Alan patted Ginger on the head lovingly, sitting together in the dark.

The rangers may have been looking for Nos-4-a2, but they were not the only ones. Zurg was watching his video screen, intrigued. He had set up cameras all over Capital Planet after reading about the murder of this Renee girl in the paper- he wasn’t going to let Nos-4-a2 go this time. He chuckled. Over the last few weeks he had gotten glimpses of the energy vampire on his cameras and managed to trace him back to an old office building. “Closer, closer,” The evil emperor smiled as his spy cameras closed in on the building. One crawled through a broken window and zoomed in on Renee.
“What do we have here?” He asked no one, grinning. “So the girl’s alive. Nos-4-a2 must have some reason for that, though, other than her just being a cyborg.” He tapped his lip. “Read off the girl’s energy signature.”
The screen glowed and changed colors, revealing where Nos had roosted to sleep in the back corner at the same time. “Their energy signatures are identical, sir.” One brain pod rolled up to him.
“Excellent.” Zurg tapped his fingers together, coming up with a scheme as the cameras searched the building.
