Happy Autoinflammatory Awarness Month, all! Autoinflammatory diseases are a rare kind of disease that deal with the inert immune system; contrary to autoimmune diseases, which deal with the acquired immune system. The most common autoinflammatory disease is PFAPA; Periodic Fever, Apthous Stomatis, Pharyngitis, and Adentitis. Auotinflammatory diseases are often called "Periodic Fevers"; they have flares that, depending on the disease, can last anywhere from a day to a month. During flares, fevers are commonly noted. In PFAPA, (usually) one of the less severe Periodic Fever Syndromes, a child typically experiences unexplained, high fevers.I was diagnosed with PFAPA, however, as my knowledge of diagnostic criteria for various autoinflammatory diseases evolved (as well as many new symptoms arising), I am seeking genetic testing. Many noninflammatory diseases are genetic. PFAPA is thought to be genetic; scientists are searching for the gene.
Autinflammatory diseases are rare. A disease is defined as US rare if there are less then 200,000 known US cases. Many autoinflammatory diseases have much fewer than 200,000 cases. HIDS (Hyper Immunoglobin-D Syndrome), for example, has 200-300 cases worldwide. While diseases can be common in certain ethnicities (Familial Mediterranean Fever can be as common as 1 in 200 to 1000 of the population in ethnicities including Jewish, Armenian, Arab, or Turkish ancestors), all are generally rare.
One of the most commom things I, and many others with autoinflammatory diseases often hear is, "It's just a virus". This is, in no way, true. The symptoms may be similar to that of a virus; they may be very different. When a fever is recurrent and (usually) high, it's time to start doubting the so called "virus".
