The young man stands like a statue. A statue clad in military uniform, camouflage, to be exact. One hand is wrapped around the subway pole, the other clenched tightly at his side, arm slanted slightly away from his body by the regulation army bag slung across his shoulder. His stance is strong, and proud. Feet are planted apart, back straight, head up. But his face... It tells another story. His brow is creased, a small furrow in the centre. He swallows hard, his adam's apple bobbing. Small signs, to be sure, but there nonetheless. And what is he seeing as he stares at nothing, out the subway window as the tunnel rushes by? Is it family, friends, a loved one that he's leaving behind? Or maybe that he's returning to, and "Will they look the same?" he wonders to himself. Will his jokes still make her smile? Will he still be his friends? Will her hair be going gray? What is he afraid of? Is he scared of what he'll find, or is he haunted by what he left behind? No one can answer. Not even him.
