Description
Scansoriopteryx heilmanni, quite possibly the very cutest thing in the world, is based on a small, probably subadult or juvenile animal closely related to, if not the same thing as Epidendrosaurus.Scales preserved around a portion of the tail, with filamentous remains around the arms and legs, suggest this animal was differentially integumentated. Here it is shown with a tiny fly, preparing to stalk, while sitting somewhat back on its legs, using its tail woodpecker/anomalurid-style, leaving the arms free to potentially used for prey capture. The elongated finger may have been used aye-aye style for probing.
Note: The first toe, or hallux, is incorrectly pointed backwards. The toe actually extends medially to slightly anterior, so would closely align to the other toes.

These maniraptorans are very strange. Hopefully more remains will show up of dinosaurs like these.
