Description
August 14, 1936
A grizzled old military man entered the room and sat down on a flimsy looking chair near his fellow officers. He pulled out a metal lighter and lit up the cigarette dangling from his mouth. "Gentleman, I'm sure you all read the papers by now." The room grew silent. "Sure did, you think they'll actually believe it?" One officer responded. "Maybe, maybe not, but it ain't gonna matter for long, those things work ungodly fast."
"The papers warned people to stay away from the beaches, but rivers and lakes ain't safe either. Soon, no water source will be safe except for our own emergency stock." The room remained silent, save for the sound of people puffing on their cigarettes. Smoke clouded the room. "Those worms, I never seen anything like 'em. Why do they always go for the eye sockets? Seems like a cruel joke from God if you ask me." Nobody responded. "Well, hopefully the eggheads find an answer, and soon. I never heard of whales ramming into u-boats but that's what the reports are tellin' me. Humans won't last another ten years if nature keeps steppin' on our toes like this."
"It just gives me the creeps. Days ago the great powers were at each other's throats, and now we're all suddenly on the same side. What we've seen is bad enough, but what the hell are the big bosses not tellin' us? Does it have something to do with the Albuquerque that disappeared two weeks ago?"
"Quiet! The last guy to mention that ship was escorted from the base by some shady looking personnel. Whatever they know, they're not sharin' with us. All we can do is continue our duties and pray that things work out." He let out a sigh of quiet despair. "May God help us all!"
