I talked to singer/songwriter/guitarist/glass harmonica player Donal Hinely at Scarborough Faire earlier this year. He related a story of how he went to audition for a label in 2004. He played the song that he played for them at the time; it was a very nice, sweet song and well-crafted. He then stated the label people told him "It's a nice song, but you need to dumb it down a bit." I think you can guess how that sat with him. Ironically, from this experience came one of Donal's best tunes "Before Music Was a Product." (Right now, the song is only available on his CD "Giants.") IMO love is really a very complex subject, and "dumbing it down" really cheapens the experience.

Left to right: Lealia, Maurenia, Nadela and Hoshina.

Yes, I remember you telling that story with that photo you took of him at the fair.  I bet a label scout for Atlanta metal outfit Withered didn't tell THEM to dumb down their lyrics.  That's because you can barely make out one word in five with their sheer sonic assault which managed (when I saw them live) to out-loud 3 Inches of Blood and Goatwhore.  Second band on the bill, and already my ears were ringing.  That scout probably would have had his ears bleeding with the first two or three songs on Withered's set list.  I told the band after the show that they were "disgustingly heavy" and they took it as the compliment it was meant to be.

Nice work on the ladies, and I salute them for sticking to their guns.  Maybe Chicken Ranch Records in Austin might be a nice fit--they have Peelander Z, so their taste is pretty solid, as far as I'm concerned.
