Description Yet another journey into my long and sordid past again. This time, we're looking at thing from the 1980s-1990s. This is by no means a complete list of stuff. For example, I couldn't really find a good picture of Fry St. in Denton. I may have to go up there again sometime.
Anyway, here's some of the stuff that influenced me at the time:
1. Lush - I frst saw them on MTV's 120 minutes in 1990, with the video to "For Love" [link] I was blown away by Miki's singing and her deep introspection into the female mind. Sadly, this band ended in 1996 with the suicide of Chris Ackland. Emma's sucessor band, Sing-Sing, was also an influence. Unfortuantely, most of the really good songs were released as bonus tracks on their CD5s IMO. I always thought comparisons to the Cocteau Twins were unjustified. The Cocteau Twins usually just had the wall of sound with the lyrics thrown on top. Lush blended the lyrics with the music a lot better.
2. Live - Another band I first saw on MTV's 120 minutes in 1990. The song was "Operation Spirit." [link] It blew me away that someone would combine Joseph Campbell-style mythology with alternative rock. They continue to influence me up to today.
3. Monty Python's Flying Circus - Although I first saw them in 1974, they really didn't start completely influencing me until the 1980s. (OKAY I'M OLD!) The troupe really crafted their work very well, and introduced me to the imporantance of quality writing.
4. Mystery Science Theater 3000 - First saw this online in the mid 1990's. Another bunch of quality writing, taking a bunch of stinky movies and turning them into comedic gold. These days, Rifftrax still influences me.
5. They Might Be Giants - I am one of the few pre-flood fans west of the Mississippi river. I first saw them in 1989 on MTV's 120 minutes with the video for Ana Ng. [link] They continue to influence me today.
6. Night Court - This sitcom was among the best TV shows I've ever seen. The writers carefully crafted each episode wonderfully, making me laugh quite a bit. They were masters of playing the dirty window of perception up for laughs.

There will be another 1980's -1990's influence meme someday...
