I don't usually do meme-themed submissions, but because a lot of artists on DA have started doing this influence map thingies, I thought I'd do one of my own. Here are my 14 big influences, and why they have inspired me:
1) SPIKE MILLIGAN - Discovered him through his poetry for kids, and I instantly fell in love with his work. I have just started listening to his stuff with the Goons.
2) CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS (and the work of Dav Pilkey in general) - Whilst everyone at my age were looking forward to the next Harry Potter, I was anticipating the latest 'epic novel' of Captain Underpants. Through these books I discovered Pilkey's other work, such as my favourite poem of all time, 'God Bless the Gargoyles'.
3) COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG - Out of the original Cartoon Network shows, this and 'Ed Edd 'n' Eddy' stood out in my mind the most. My more exaggerated drawings are indebted to Courage's classic wild takes.
4) THE SIMPSONS - Pretty much the show that inspired me to start drawing cartoons in the first place. I know the quality hasn't been consistent lately, but the early episodes were amazingly well-written! Matt Groening is an idol.
5) REX THE RUNT - I discovered this series through Atom Films.com way back in 2003, and I was hooked from the very first episode. Vince was a big influence in the development of Spinboy!
6) MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS - This show changed my perception of what comedy is all about. The animations by Terry Gilliam still confound me!
7) ED EDD 'N' EDDY - Probably my favourite of the original Cartoon Cartoons. Interesting characters, the zany humour, the wobbly animation style... all cooked to perfection.
8) THE BEANO - I used to read both the Beano and The Dandy as a kid, but I've always felt that the Beano had the more superior stories. My favs were Dennis and Gnasher, Calamity James and The Bash Street Kids.
I really loved the 'Dennis and Gnasher' TV series from the 1990s. It's such a shame that the current revamp is very out-of-character.
9) LOONEY TUNES - A timeless inspiration, many of the shorts are still hilarious as they were back in the 1940-50's., and I always turn to them for when I need help writing silly gags and such.
10) WALLACE AND GROMIT - The 3 original films introduced me to the possibilities of stopmotion animation, as well as the work of Aardman Animations. Peter Sallis is peerless as the voice of Wallace.
11) REEVES AND MORTIMER - My favourite comedy duo of all time. Fell in love with them from a very early age through the original 'Shooting Stars', and almost everything they've done so far is sheer bizarre brilliance. 'The Weekenders' would have been a fab comedy series, but the pilot in itself is a work of art.
12) SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS - Because I didn't have cable telly at my house back when I was about 10 years old, I discovered this show through CiTV. And what a discovery it was! Like The Simpsons, it seems to have lost its way recently, but when it was good, it was GENIUS!
13) REN AND STIMPY - The early John K-produced episodes in particular. There isn't any other cartoon I can compare it with. Ands that's why I think it's awesome!
14) FUTURAMA - Loved it from the first episode back in 1999, and its' probably the only Sci-Fi series (besides Doctor Who) I can bare to watch in full. Unlike Matt Groening's other show, it doesn't seem to have gone stale yet.
