Description
Built from 1958-1962 by English Electric and Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns. The Class 40s were one of the many mainstays of the mainlines of the UK. The Class 40s originated from LMS 10000-10001 as well as the BR D16/2 (same axel configuration). During the testing of the prototypes the two of the locos were simply know as English Electric Type 4s or EE Type 4 for short. The first Class 40, No. D200 debut on a passenger service from Liverpool Lime Street to Norwich on the 18th of April 1958; D201, D206-D209 entered operation doing Great Northern service on the East Coast Mainline. The LMS were pleased with these locomotives as well, so some were put on the West Coast Mainline.
The Class 40s during their production run had many variants through-out it's lifespan, from White Discs, to Headboards (Normal and Split) to Covered Headboards (because they were outdated, then replaced with marker lights within them).
The withdrawal of the Class 40s started in 1976, when three locomotives (40005, 40039 and 40102) were taken out of service. At over 130 tons the Class were by then considered underpowered. Furthermore, most if not all Class 40s were not fitted with Air Brakes. As withdrawals continued some were shifted over to the Midland Reigon to bolster the Peaks.
As of now, there are quite a few examples of the Class 40s still around happily restored and preserved.
Additionally, the Class 40s were know as "Whistlers" because of the turbo noise.
