[<< PREVIOUS EPISODE ]                                [ NEXT EPISODE >>]

The evening staff at Grand Oaks Hospital is swift but gentle in transferring Shellie up to the recovery ward where her bed has been prepared. In cases of serious fractures such as hers, a set of traction slings will be needed for the correct alignment of her broken leg in the first phase of treatment along with a mandatory hospital stay.

Shellie, now more lucid, winces under clenched teeth as her big casted leg is slung up and elevated up to a rather steep angle. The thick plaster has now set and hardened fully, feeling cold to the touch. Her casted arm, which is already held tightly in the confines of a precautionary shoulder brace, is laid carefully against a mountain of pillows by her head. Shellie lets out a long labored breath as she goes limp against her soft surroundings.

As the nurse prepares to turn out the lights for the night, Shellie gestures towards her pile of belongings at the corner, her phone specifically...

Some time ago, you had planned to take Shellie out to dinner at her favorite place in celebration of her impending cast removal. That night was to have been tonight. As the hours ticked by, you had been more and more worried as it was not like her to be this late returning home even on crutches. Your gut tells you something is very wrong as repeated calls go unanswered. You prepare to head down to the University to get some answers when your phone rings.

Shellie's voice, normally rather chipper, now cold and quivering, gives you a chilling account of the last few hours. She tells you she'll be fine and asks for you not to worry; she's a terrible liar and you know it. Grand Oaks Hospital is a fair distance away but you speed there immediately.

Despite arriving well past visiting hours, you convince the nurse on duty to allow a quick visit on the condition that you don't disturb the patient. The sight before you is one which shocks you deeply. Seeing Shellie's battered body contorted in a myriad of slings, and braces is difficult to take. Her face, though asleep, still bears some expression of pain. Instinctively, you reach out to comfort her even in the smallest way. The nurse stops you, saying softly: please let her rest, she's had a long day.

You promise to return soon.

Authors note:

A somewhat somber entry that fits many of our moods nowadays. How are you all holding up under the lockdown?

On a technical note, the over-bed traction setup I had envisioned months ago has been completed. This is my new custom made Orthopedic Traction Frame to be used in this new "Hospital Room Traction Series."  It is based on the Zimmer brand of octagonal traction bars and clamps common to many hospitals. I bought a real life set of them years back for collections sake. Now they serve as great reference for building the 3d model for it.

The shoulder brace Shellie is now wearing is a new addition too. I felt something was missing in her setup as there's just something eye catching about seeing her big casted arm jutting upward awkwardly that emphasizes her predicament. (Also because doing a rigged arm sling is a real pain I wanted to avoid.) I don't think there is a specific type name for this brace other than Shoulder Abduction Brace. It is usually prescribed for shoulder and collarbone injuries and in this case it is used as a precautionary for upper arm stabilization.

The thoughts (and the words) of poor Shellie…

Shellie, a short time ago brought to the room and carefully put in bed by the caring nurses, is still shaken and numbed by the aftermath of the accident.

Aftershocks of which the poor gal will bring the signs on her body for many more weeks.

She’s overwhelmed by the pain and fatigue and not even the mountain of fluffy pillows that the nurses have judiciously distributed at every corner of her bed can relieve the heaviness of the situation.

With no little effort the nurses have fixed the gigantic cast that imprisons the leg (again fractured, but in more several places than last time) in a complex scaffolding that will keep it constantly in traction.

The rather bulky cast on her right arm was equally "accommodated" in an objectively ugly to see, but no less useful, tool as it can offer her a valid support for the heaviness of such cast.

Shellie, almost on the verge of collapsing and giving in to a crisis of weeping, remembers, however, that she still has to do one thing, a small thing, seemingly insignificant, but actually very important.

Give news to those who love her.

Shellie’s thoughts, however, do not go to her mother or sister who would also be worried about her condition.

Her first thought is for that handsome boy from the other class, one of the few who was immediately courteous and helpful to her as soon as she arrived at the University.

One of the few not to have smiled at the sight of her that proceeded slowly and awkwardly because of her crutches and casted foot.

One of the few who didn’t tease her behind her back…

That same guy she has a soft spot for…

That same guy who was supposed to take her out to dinner tonight to celebrate her joyful "relief" from the cast in her foot.

But what relief?

Anything but relief!

That damned, fortuitous accident, resulting in a ruinous fall on Alexa and Samantha, even covered Shellie with more layers of thick plaster of Paris than she had on her a few hours before...

Shellie didn’t feel like phoning him yet, perhaps because she doesn’t want him to think that she’s just a clumsy, unlucky girl, in a nutshell a real loser...

First, though, that Shellie can decide what to do it’s her phone ringing…

It's him!

Shellie, in a trembling voice, answers the call «Hello, who’s there?».

J. (we’ll call him like that…) on the other side of the phone «Ah thankfully you answer me! I was starting to worry! How are you? How did it go at the hospital? Did they finally remove the cast from your leg?».

Shellie, in a clearly troubled voice, «How am I? Uh, here we go... there have been complications...».

J. «Complications? What complications? What do you mean? Please tell me, don’t leave me hanging».

Shellie «You see J. this afternoon I was over the moon. I knew that a few hours later I'd finally would have that damn cast removed from my leg and then I’d go and have a pizza with you... I was so happy! Then, instead, I slipped awkwardly as I was descending the stairs and...».

But Shellie can’t control her emotions anymore.

The weight of the last few hours has now become unbearable for her.

She can’t stand such a load of tension anymore.

Her voice broken by emotion stops and the words are replaced by panting and sobbing.

Shellie’s starting to cry her eyes out.

J. «Oh my God Shellie, what happened to you, please tell me!».

Shellie, pulling up with her nose, takes a few seconds to breathe deeply and then recounts, albeit quickly and omitting many details, of her frightening fall down the stairs, of how she fell colliding both Alexa and Samantha who at that time were climbing upstairs, of how all the three of them, aching and agonizing, had been transported to the Grand Oaks Hospital ER for diagnostic tests.

Shellie tells J. of the severity of the diagnosis and the severity, if possible even greater, of the prognosis: a new, and more serious, bunch of fractures of the right leg and a bad fracture of the right arm as well as various abrasions and bruises scattered throughout the body.

Shellie recounts hearing distinctly, as they were putting her in casts, Samantha's screams of pain and wails (she obviously badly tanned too…) and, above all, Alexa Vaillancourt's furious squeals.

Shellie clearly remembers hearing Alexa yelling at her and insulting her with unrepeatable epithets...

J., though shocked at what he just heard from Shellie, tries to calm her down, telling her that she’s a strong girl and that she can overcome this bad misadventure as well.

Shellie, however, is destroyed and keeps sobbing.

She tells J. «You see J., it’s not just the pain from the fractures or the annoyance for the casts so uncomfortable and heavy that I'll be bound to wear in the next few weeks. I'm worried, in fact I'm literally terrified at the thought of what Alexa Vaillancourt can do to me...».

J. «Alexa? And what do you want her to do to you? From what you told me, she badly injured herself and has been brought to the hospital as well... She's going to have her own problems right now...».

Shellie «No J. you don't understand! While I was in the cast room surrounded by medics and paramedics… I could distinctly hear her squealing in the next room. She seemed possessed by the devil. From her mouth came unrepeatable words, expressions I could simply never repeat, a sea of terrible insults towards me. She firmly holds me responsible for her accident and consequent misfortune... Poor me! My life is gonna be ruined!».

J. «But how can she hold yourself responsible? You’re not responsible for anything! You’re just an unfortunate victim of events! You slipped and it was totally random that you ended up on them two who were climbing the stairs. Besides, you got very hurt too... By the way...».

Shellie «What?».

J. «By the way, how did you slip? From what I’ve seen in the last few weeks you’re usually very cautious when walking on crutches...».

Shellie «What do you want me to tell you J.? I don’t know what happened to me. All I remember is I was getting ready to go down the stairs. I was very focused, as always since I got that damned cast... At one point it was as if a crutch had missed the support on the floor, I found myself unbalanced with the weight forward and I fell with my face forward down the stairs. I'm so sorry for Alexa and Samantha, but I had nothing to do with their accident, it wasn't my fault that they were going up the stairs at just that moment!».

J. «Of course you had nothing to do with it! How could it be otherwise! Mmm… from what you told me it would seem to me as if you bumped into something or someone or, better, whether you tripped at someone or someone tripped you off. Although I realize that the latter is simply impossible. Who could be stupid enough to stick his foot out to trip a person walking on crutches and with a casted leg? Anyway, Shellie, you have to be quiet. Definitively it wasn’t your fault. No one can blame you and summon you to be responsible for what happened...».

Shellie «Go tell Alexa though... You don’t know that girl... She, of all people, “Miss smell under her nose” and "Miss I know everything"... She’s already unbearable and irritable in herself... Let’s imagine then after such an accident! I don’t know yet what actually happened to her. I strongly hope she only got away with a few scratches or abrasions and didn't break anything... As soon as possible, I’m going to ask one of the nurses to let me know about her condition. But I know for a fact that if she just broke a fingernail (and I'm afraid she got more hurt than that...) she’d make me pay... I’m afraid of her and, above all, of her family».

J. «But what do you want her to do to you? From the way you described the scene to me, I’m afraid she got badly hurt and battered too. In the next few days, maybe in the next few weeks, in all likelihood, she too will be sadly stuck in a hospital bed... She will be completely helpless and simply incapable of hurting a fly. She won’t be able even to lay a hand on you...».

Shellie «I’m not afraid just of her. Like I said, I’m afraid of her family. They’re rich, they're powerful, they're people used to getting what they want. God forbid, because of me Alexa did really get hurt... Her family will hire the best lawyers to sue me for the injuries I caused her beloved daughter...».

J. «Lawyers? Suits? Courts? Mmm... I’m afraid you see too many movies or legal dramas dear Shellie...».

Shellie «Believe me J., I'm really terrified. You don’t know Alexa, you don't know how obnoxious and snobbish she could be. The typical rich girl from a good family used to always be right and to always be able to do what she wants. I hope I didn’t hurt her seriously, but since she was screaming aloud (as if she was writhing with pain…) until a few minutes ago, I'm afraid it's not like that... I heard absurd and contorted phrases that I didn't quite understand (also because she was squealing as if being slaughtered…), but the sense was that she, one way or another, would make me pay for all her inconvenience... You understand? Oh J. I'm desperate at the mere idea that I will be suffering the Vallaincourts vengeance...».

J. «But what revenge? They will be, understandable, concerned about their beloved daughter's condition, so they won't have any time to think about you... And then, considering what will be her most than likely conditions, I think that the eventual act of summons will be written directly on her daughter's bulky casts... he he he. I'm doubling up with laughter at the idea!».

Shellie «J. stop it! There’s nothing to laugh about! You don’t know her! If she were to hold me responsible for her misfortune (and, unfortunately, I find it hard to deny that it is) for me it would be over. I should change school, neighborhoods and maybe even town... Poor me, I'm ruined!».

J. «Even change town? Now Shellie I think you might be overstating that slightly...».

Shellie «For sure! By the way, Alexa is an experienced horsewoman, she was training for national races. All she did was talk about it, by now she had informed pretty much the whole University... I’m afraid that after today's accident she will no longer be able to ride a horse for who knows how many months... And all this will only increase her anger and fury towards me. So once again... poor me!».

J. «But come on Shellie, don't do that... you have to try not to break down... After all, Alexa Vaillancourt is the least of your thoughts now. Maybe even she, once she has calmed down and vented her anger at what happened, will realize that what happened was due only to an unfortunate coincidence and that it was no one's fault if she got hurt...».

Shellie «Her? Do me a favour!!! Keep on dreaming… You don't know her! She’ll for sure find a way to make me pay for it!».

J. «Please, give it a rest! If she really got hurt as bad as you're afraid, in the next few weeks she'll only be able to ride... a wheelchair. I'm already laughing if I just think about the scene. Alexa Vaillancourt, all casted, who wheelchair-bound sadly wanders up and down the stable and caresses one of her beloved four-footed animals from the “metallic horse” on which she’s confined... A scene like this deserves to be filmed and posted right away on social media, he he he... Tell me the truth Shellie, don't you already feel better just thinking about a scene like that?».

Shellie, by then growing impatient «Well, you see J., it's just thinking about a scene like that that I'm even more terrified! If that viper can’t ride a horse in the next few months, she's going to find a way to make me pay dearly... She’s going to sue me for personal injury. I’d do good to still have my britches... Poor me!».

J., trying to change the subject since "his" Shellie seems to be focused only on Alexa's brutal reaction to what happened a few hours earlier, «All right, now Shellie you try to rest. Maybe I'm going to get in the car and jump in and see you. How about that?».

Shellie, recovering at least for a moment a tone of voice strong and stentorian «No! No J. please don't come! And then the time of the visits is long over. Now I'm pretty much tired, I’m start releasing all the tension I accumulated in the last few hours. I feel really weak. I need to rest. I guess I’ll call you tomorrow».

Thus Shellie abruptly hangs up the phone.

It's not because of her exhaustion that she doesn't want J. to visit her that very night.

Shellie is undoubtedly tired and prostrate. But the real reason why at least for the moment she doesn't want J. next to her is that she doesn't want him to see her in that bad state.

Helpless, dejected, devastated, with the right limbs of the body heavily casted, immobilized in a hospital bed and, moreover, with the diaper "in plain sight" (let's say...).

She gets deeply embarrassed at the mere idea…

Shellie's nerves begin to crumble and big tears begin to surge up into her beautiful eyes slowly coming down her cheeks... Warm tears, swollen with pain from fractures, irritation with the overall situation, embarrassment for the not-properly feminine position in which she’s forced and also sincere fear for what Alexa Vaillancourt can do to her, even more dangerous and angrier now that she’s injured and “disabled” too…

It will certainly be a long night for Shellie, but also for Samantha and Alexa.

A night of pain and annoyance for all three.

A sleepless night, almost certainly, for all three.

In fact, maybe not, not for all three, not for Alexa, stuffed, as she was, with such a strong dose of sedatives capable of taking down a rhino...

Great stuff.

The quality of your render is fantastic as normal, the textures are amazing, the plaster being wonderfully realistic, with the rougher patches and the bits where the plaster has puddled slightly on drying to give a smooth glossy finish. I love braces and things, but find the modern ones a bit utilitarian, but you have managed to make this one look really appealing, with basic stamped metal being formed into the right shapes, the smooth plastic and the one-size-fits-all soft lining.

Shellie of course looks adorable, particularly well done hair and skin texture.

Brilliant.

Thanks! Yeah many of the newer braces look somewhat uninteresting. Maybe it's the colors they use now?

(For mine I stuck with a more retro 70s-80s beige styling. )

Also, I wonder why these shoulder abduction braces are so cheap compared to other medical wares like cam walkers and hinged braces.

I routinely see shoulder abduction braces for under 20 dollars now.

I never really look at orthopedic stuff for sale. It is weird that these sound so cheap, but then again, perhaps a lot of us had preferences formed in earlier times with older equipment?

Cool image though.

You always come up with something new to hide the nipples. (I'm assuming that you know you can show them here, but it's not your style to do so.)

The shoulder brace looks awesome! And the traction system is also outstanding!

It's nice to hear that Shellie isn't alone exposed to Alexandra's wrath. There is actually someone who has an interest in protecting them: me (well, or any other reader)!

Regarding lockdown: I guess I am quite privileged and cannot complain. I can work in home office and can leave the house to go jogging or going for a walk. (The forest is not that far away.) Even talking to friends in the neighborhood is not a problem as long as we keep the required distance.

But I wonder, if this strap over her chest could stimulate some very sensitive body parts...

The traction device at the foot of the bed is a fabrication at best- real ones don't quite look like that. They either use weights (old fashioned) or the have a bunch of dials for controls.

I'm partial to the weights as opposed to screws or other gizmos for applying the pressure. Even better when the leg has no cast but a steinmann pin through it and anchoring a stirrup. Lots of bruising to be seen, and the damsel always gets a cast afterwards...
