Description

This was my submission for Smogon's 28th Create-a-Pokemon Project cycle, a Bug/Dragon Pokemon with Neutralizing Gas, Compound Eyes, and strong mixed offenses to take down pivots in the metagame. It got second place out of 44 total entries, which I'm proud of. I haven't thought of a name for it yet that really clicked for me, so for now, it'll just be "my CAP 28 design".

This design started off as a rework of my CAP 23 design, which I've called Phantastik . Tapeworms are buggy enough, and wyrms are dragon-y enough, so I repurposed the idea for CAP 28! It's a nice callback, too, since my design for CAP 23 was pretty popular. I added a dash of personality, to match Gen. VIII's trend of making a character out of a species.

The first big "prompt" from CAP 28 was to make the Bug/Dragon Pokemon look like it could have the ability Neutralizing Gas. Inspired by Centipeetle's mane and ShunosaurusLii's CAP 27 design , I added tube worm elements into the design. The horns on the design are inspired from tube worms themselves (white length + red tips), and the gas that comes out of them are inspired from the hydrothermal vents tube worms live around, as well as incense sticks. The striking red color of tube worms also became an accent color on the rest of the design. I shaded it in starting with the idea of "underwater" shading for the design, but it started looking like the official Pokemon style, so I went with that.

I still wanted to push my design since adding that inspiration, though. Here's where I tried a lot of things, including a more naga-themed pose, hexapodal design, Medusa, and a dog, out of the things I remember. Ultimately, I didn't like any of the iterations as much as the original (although this wasn't without feedback from the #flavor channel on the CAP Discord server).

The direction stats was going, though, helped inspire the next design element to add to the design. We were going to get some pretty big stats, so even if CAP 28 was physically frail, I felt like my design should look "bigger". I ended up adding centipede-like segments to the body to make it a little more than paper-thin. As a bonus, it made the design more strongly resonate as a Bug-type Pokemon. I also made the design bulgier in case we got Thick Fat, but I kept it anyway, because it gave the design more physicality.

Then, my design for CAP 28 got thrown a curveball in the form of Compound Eyes. At this time, my design had no visible eyes, and I wasn't going to trust that CAP voters would believe that this design had eyes under the gas mane. I struggled with adding eyes into the design for a while, trying all sorts of iterations with fins with eye patterns. People liked the eye fins, but there was a dilemma--if they were real eyes, then the design looked eldritch and creepy, but if they were merely patterns, then they didn't really match Compund Eyes an ability. Yilx was super-helpful with a piece of feedback here to make glowing eyes, which I did by having them pierce through the gas mane. In addition, I made the connection by making the eye fins glow as well, hinting to Compound Eyes while keeping that design element while avoiding the "eldritch" feeling to it.

From there, I was mostly comfortable with the design! I still made tweaks to address some residual bits of mine, though: Firstly, I felt like blank glowing eyes was, well, too blank, so i hinted that there were irises in there. Secondly was the palette. I felt like the palette I had chosen was too close to Pokemon like Rayquaza, Dreepy, and CAP's own Syclant. I tried out a pinkish red one, inspired by Luvi and red dragon millipedes. It was popular, but the oriignal palette was popular too, so I polled the two options, and the original won out.

The last change I made was to update the arms. Throughout the entire process, the ribbon-like arms had been left unchanged, while all of the other parts of the design had gone through iterations. I settled on the trope of the gorilla-armed dragon in making the arms strong and thick. I was much more comfortable using those arms to justify CAP 28's base 135 attack stat than thin, blade-like arms.

After that, I brightened up the colors on the design and made that version of the image my final submission! If I had more time, I would have tried out some of the other feedback given on the forums and on Discord, but I was too busy for that.

Overall, big thanks to the people on the CAP Discord server for feedback on the design, including: 20Yelram02, Amamama, Birkal, Darquezze, Gleeboop, KoA, Mos-Quitoxe, Mova, Pip, Reiga, Sunfished, tknowledge, Yilx, and Zephyr2007!
