Description

This was my submission for Smogon's 30th Create-a-Pokemon Project, a Poison/Flying Pokemon with two formes, activated by a unique held item.

  • Left: Its default forme is a tank with the ability Stamina that uses Sludge Bomb.
  • Center: Its unique held item.
  • Right: When holding an item, it becomes a wallbreaker with the ability Tinted Lens that uses Brave Bird.

This design got fourth place, which I'm pretty stoked about. I know there are places where I could have made the design better and potentially done better in the polls, but I was pretty exhausted from both CAP moderation duties and from creating two designs + an item to work on it any further, so this is where I left the designs. You can see a writeup on both of these designs in my final submission post on Smogon here .

If I had to name the custom held item for the design, I would probably call it "Poison Quill", "Toxic Quill", etc, given that the quill is the part of a bird's feather that can be used as a writing instrument!

I had the idea of a phantom thief on my mind for a while since I've made a Astrolotl , a CAP design based on a magical girl. Given how CAP 30 was shaping up to be a bird and how I had Persona 5 on my mind, I ended up sketching out a plague doctor and phantom thief pair. The sketches were pretty popular, so I ended up fleshing out the idea.

I think this pair of designs is very much representative one way I develop a design, where I start with a character and personality and turn those into Pokemon. Since I got feedack early on to continue these ideas, I felt like I wasn't able to experiment and learn.

One thing I did pay attention to this time I didn't in previous CAP art processes was eye design. I had a standard cartoony eye I would go to for many Pokemon designs, and I think that hampered me when people scrutinized my art. Once I started paying attention to the variety of eye shapes Pokemon had, I found out that, my eye designs were pretty boring, and that I had to put some care into designing eyes! In this case, I think the eyes I ended up with could be more unique yet, but this would be something I consider in the future, instead of haphazardly retrofitting unique eyes onto an existing design.
