Description

After I got a comment on my art style , I thought I should write down the influences for my art style. Thus, after 13+ years of being on this site, I've filled out the Influence Map meme ! Each of these images represents an influence on my art style, with larger images representing larger influences.

From largest to smallest, left to right, top to bottom:

  • (3x3) Pokemon:
    • I got into drawing because I wanted to create my own Pokemon designs. In particular, I distinctly remember getting an unofficial "how to draw Pokemon book", and inside was a tutorial on how to build up a Charizard from circles. As such, I used Charizard as my representative.
    • Image: "Encounter With Shiny Pokemon" , illustrated by Ken Sugimori.
      • This was one of the illustrations that came was a part of my physical Pokedex book for R/S/E, which I remember fondly.
    • Artists I found through Pokemon:
  • (2x2) Kingdom Hearts:
    • If you were around during 2007 - 2009 DeviantArt, you'll know that Kingdom Hearts II art was everywhere. I actually discovered DeviantArt through Kingdom Hearts--in particular, through this comic ! Tetsuya Nomura's art style also played a heavy influence on how I drew people, as my animesque style, sharp angles, and spiky anime hair are a direct influence from his designs.

    • Artists I found through Kingdom Hearts:
  • (2x2) Smogon University:
    • This is a competitive Pokemon fan site with a large artist community. I've met a lot of cool artists on the site, and by competing in the Create-a-Pokemon Project, I've learned a lot about art from fellow artists.

    • Artists I met through Smogon University:
  • (2x1) The Cave of Dragonflies:
    • This is an extensive Pokemon fan site with a key focus on lore, puzzles, and sprites. The site's spriting guide and sprite gallery were major influences on how I drew and colored images digitally.

  • (2x1) Blood Stain:
    • I found Blood Stain by pure chance scrolling through the "new" section of DeviantArt, and since then, it's become a major inspiration. Sigeel has a clean yet expressive art style, her backgrounds are insanely well-composed, and she has a mastery over storytelling through comics.

  • (1x2) Neopets:
    • I spent significant fractions my life on this website during my childhood! I enjoyed the fun, expressive the characters of Neopia. The amount and diversity of art (e.g., Neopets types, NPC characters) made fantastic design inspirations.
    • Image: Lenny Conundrum Wizard
  • (1x2) Sam Nielson:
    • Sam Nielson's pieces stand out above other illustrators' for his sublime attention to lighting. His class on lighting, which teaches you how to see lighting from a 3D and photography perspective, is well worth its price. His class has singlehandedly changed my workflow the most!

  • (1x1) The Sky Temple of Lugia and Articuno:
    • This was a Pokemon fan site with a large art community. I met a lot of people who would inspire and motivate me to draw.
    • Artists I met through The Sky Temple of Lugia and Articuno:

  • (1x1) Scandinavia and the World:
    • This is a webcomic with a simple, expressive art style, which was helpful in helping me distill characters' essences.
    • Image: Denmark by Humon (deactivated)
  • (1x1) Autodesk Maya:
    • This 3D modeling program taught me how to think about objects and lighting in 3D space, which helped my 2D drawings.

  • (1x1) Sinix Design:
    • An art YouTuber, Sinix breaks down human anatomy in a detailed yet illuminating way. His art videos have made me notice things about my understanding of human anatomy I wouldn't have thought about otherwise. For instance, I always thought my drawings of humans looked stiff, but it wasn't until I saw his video on necks did I learn why; necks actually lean forward slightly, while I was always drawing them vertically straight. Additionally, I appreciate how Sinix explains common mistakes people make when drawing certain body parts. This helps me recognize what issues I have in my art are instead of always trying to improve without knowing where to look.

  • (1x1) Unfilled:
    • Lastly, I left the last cell in the template empty. By filling in this cell, I thought it would make the inspiration map appear "complete", and I didn't want to give that impression. You can consider that cell reserved for the future influences people will make on my art!
