A great font for tiny pixel works:Each character:

The quick brown fox
jumps over the lazy dog.
Each alphanumeric character is a maximum of four pixels tall, excluding two-pixel tails. The longest characters are five pixels wide. Each space is one pixel wide, and each line down is two pixels down.
The hardest characters to make a miniature version would be 8, &, #, and @, because of their complexities. Despite the losses that had to be made when shrinking, they are still legible when at normal size.
I challenge anyone to make or find a smaller font than this.

Sorry for necroposting but I made my own as well . Not the smallest font but it's monospaced which is good for ASCII art.

Yeah, a five pixel tall font would be much easier to make.

Doing this may be better for the small s and z: (0=white pixel, x=black pixel)

Possibly! I think I neglected those options because they looked too tilted for my liking (not that what I have currently is that much clearer... XD).

Cool.
I think it might be worth it to extend the s and z into the tall letter space. Maybe the g/y also, if you can cut a pixel out of the j.
