Description
Been itching to try me some semi-realistic Louis since I had that life drawing class on Saturday. His body turned out a little stockier but that's only because of the quick colors ... Also my sister makes damn sweet digital paintings and wanted some photo references of people who'd look a little like Louis if he was real. PS: She'll be opening up commissions soon, so definitely check her out for when she announces it!
The references are King Louis XIV from 'Le Roi Danse', Kitty Canary from 'Castle', and you can find Iason here and Chris Vernel here .

He kind of reminds me of Prince Poppycock from America's Got Talent.

I have to say, I rather like this interpretation of Louis. I like your comics as much as the next guy, but when you dip into realism, it's quite nice. He looks surprisingly masculine, as if his makeup is his only real source of dandy-ism.

You should see my sister's interpretation based on this: [link] She sent me the image with and without the makeup layer, and he does look very masculine without it.

I think the most effeminate thing about him, now that the makeup's gone, is the hair. Gonna shave that riiiiiiight off.
Oh, and maybe the lashes of course, mine are something similar in curl, and they've never made me look a dandy.

I'd gotten the impression that his hair was pretty much like kitty canarys, only more bouncy and unrealisticly long and puffy.

No, it was always crazy curly and bouncy, I just simplify it for the sake of the animation.

It's neat getting to see some references to help bring the character to life. Thanks for sharing!

Have you looked up Tim Roth as Archibald Cunninham from Rob Roy? That might be another reference you could use. But you've got some great ones going!

Gave 'em a peek and I have to say ... yow, both those references look like they could bite your head off! Archibald looks more like how I imagined his father, not Louis. He's one of those ridiculous cartoon characters who manages to look youthful despite the pancake makeup that should be damaging his pores ...

True - I was remembering he looked less harsh than that, but I was wrong. He was a great villain in that movie, though.

THAT HAIR IS SO GORGEOUS!!! I really love the character Louis, he just seems like someone you could get along with fairly well and seems pretty laid back...except for certain scenarios. Well done!

The way I see it he loves meeting new people and generally being friendly, but everyone has a breaking point. I'd love to know a Louis.

i actually know a kid named louis who pretty much fits this description. except your louis doesnt remind me of him; it reminds me of a cross between kiss and jack sparrow....with a touch of fairies and a dash of toon logic. why, you ask??? maybe cuz i am crazy myself or maybe i am simply out there...

I so would, too! I love all of your characters, but I think that Louis has to be my absolute favorite, and I love the angle you've taken on this. NEVER STOP BEING AWESOME.

I meant with the personality.
Not the appearances, although looking at it with the realistic drawing you can see the nobility in him just like in Lestat. ;w;

Lestat is a sadistic, manipulative, generally untrustworthy person; I've seen Interview With A Vampire as well as read the book and The Vampire Lestat (book and movie again). Louis hardly shares anything with him apart from being blonde and French; he forfeits his aristocracy when he decides he's had enough of his father and takes to the sea.

I always enjoy seeing pictures with Louis Despatis, really.
And I find it amusing that you choose to name him after Louis XIV. Mostly because you use so much make up on him. He makes me think of Louis XIV's brother : Phillipe d'OrlΓ©ans, who was homosexual. So I always came to imagine your Louis and Phillipe talking about make up for hours....

I hear you there. I watched Charles II: The Power and the Passion in its four parts on Youtube, and it had both Louis XIV and Phillipe in there. But Phillipe was a douche in that movie!

Kasakstrow In reply to quartervirus-archive [2012-10-17 10:08:18 +0000 UTC]
For my part, I watched a french documentary about him, with reconstitutions. He was always portrayed with a lot of make-up, a violet jacket with a horrible amount of ribbons, and always surrounded by his "mignons".

Aagh, wish I could find that documentary. Sounds interesting, to be sure. Have you heard of the Alexia Terrabotti novels byyyy ... I forget her name. Set in Steampunk London, there's a gay vampire there named Lord Akeldama who I think had significant inspiration from Phillipe, now that you mention it. He loves Roccoco fashion and also has "drones" who follow him around ... and he calls them pet names, too.
