Description

Kind of an odd concept that I had to get out of my mind, I've had this plastic tarp sitting in my garage for about a year now! I thought it could be fun to use in the studio as a backdrop (which I've done), but it entered my mind early this year as perhaps being a really cool backdrop for something kind of sci-fi-ish outside.  However, when I scheduled to shoot with Anna, the want to create something with it kind of took over and I started imagining how interesting it could be as a man-made element with nature kind of being seen through it. I thought the way the light would hit the plastic would be a kind of weird and interesting element to the photographs. Afterwards, I remembered Marta Bevacqua's beautiful series "Plastic Woods" and although hers focuses more on elegance and fluidity, I really love the way she used her plastic! I think cropping your image to include only a small portion of the chair covered in plastic, the whole model in that fantastic pose, and those beautiful flowers all at 85mm focal length could strengthen your photo.

At the same time I feel something while looking at your picture as it is now. It's a frantic, frustrated feeling....a sense that the scene is "unfinished." Maybe that's what you were going for.

Thank you very much for your critique and thoughts!  I do enjoy the frantic unfinished feeling, kind of a work-in progress, but I agree it needs a little something different to really make it successful

This is interesting!

I very much like this pose. I've seen something similar, but not quite like this. For one thing, the way her hair style is asymmetric echos the asymmetry of the overall pose. This model and this pose create a winner! I'd like to see another version of this shot of the model with light coming from one direction, like inside a room with a window or outside at sunset. Just an idea.

I applaud your experimentation with the plastic. Honestly, I'm not sure it's working for me. I get that you're trying to show contrast. For my taste I would enjoy such a contrast with no figure involved. Just a plastic sheet or sheets artfully arranged amongst flowering branches might work. For example, just cut this in half and look at the left side. I think it's pretty cool! The focal point becomes the sunlight on the folded part.

Alternatively, I could see the figure with the plastic sheet as a background, even with flowers showing through. But in that case I would suggest all flowers hidden behind the plastic. The plastic looks cold and the figure looks warm. So that's a nice contrast.

I hope you don't resent my feedback. If you do, just let me know and I'll be quiet. And, BTW, I welcome honest feedback on my work if you feel so inclined.

Best regards, Don

Thank you very much!  And I really appreciate the feedback!  Unlike some critiques I receive, yours is well-thought out and makes sense. I was ambivalent on the outcome, but a friend absolutely loved the photos, so you just never know!  It's kind of niche' and quirky, I suppose. I would really love it as a study without the model as well, no offense to the model of course
