Description Her Last Mourning is the story of a woman who is so full of grief and despair over the loss of a loved one that she fades off into nothing but a ghost. The concept and styling was inspired by Victorian mourning clothes and the tradition of covering yourself in black to show that you've lost a loved one. The idea that everybody would automatically know you were in grieving made me think of the mourner as an outcast in her greatest time of need. In this story, the grieving woman flees society to avoid the stares of her peers and gets lost in the despair that has already settled in her heart. Roarie portrays the woman in grief with subtle gestures and mournful eyes as she's faced with the harsh light of day. As the light fades, she fades with it into a ghostly figure who has given into the sadness that has invaded her soul.

I really like the ghost like framing of Roarie by other photos of her.

I know I don't stop by and comment on your pictures nearly enough, but this one totally jumped out at my as I was scrolling through.  In general, I love how I can always tell when a photograph is yours, just based on the overall style.  This one, though, feels like it's just a little bit outside your comfort zone.  Instead of the usual carefree, warm, summer/spring vibe that I usually get from your stories, the darkness and sorrow of this one definitely speak to my inner goth kid.  (Not that there's anything at all wrong with your usual feel.  I love your work in general, I just had to pipe up about this one.

Eeep thank you so much!  Always a pleasure to get a comment from somebody that's actually analyzing what I'm doing!  In recent years, I've lost a lot of people I love and the heartbreak that surrounds it often makes me think of these kinds of characters, the kinds of characters that eventually give up. So, making a series like this made sense. I also collaborated on it with a friend who did the second and more ghostly half, and her work is much sadder than mine in general.  She likes to joke that my work is a lot more marketable to agencies because I'm obsessive about sharp well-lit images, and she's always often wallowing in darkness and haze which is appealing to the tumblr crowd.   I've been a lot happier person in recent years, just in general with what I'm doing in life and the people I hang around, so yeah, mostly you get serene depictions in my photography.  But sometimes my head just swims in sadness, and this is the kind of thing that gets pulled out of it:  Girls giving into grief and fading away into ghosts. I'm really glad that your inner goth kid liked it, because that means I did the concept some justice!
