I am sorry if this pulled any of the wrong strings. My own upbringing was less than ideal as well. Nothing this insane, though. Kudos to your dad for breaking the cycle!
For Torch's backstory, I decided to go balls to the wall crazy with him having only the most extreme forms of luck — good or bad, and nothing in between, to match his over-the-top mannerisms. Either he hits the jackpot or things couldn't be more miserable. Though he is being rewarded with much more positives after leading such a good life, as far as his title allowed it. I always felt he was a very reasonable character in the show, even that time he was portrayed as a bad guy. It's risky to appear soft in dragon society.

I imagine Torch coming back when he's the Dragon Lord and getting into a fight with his father that lasts the best part of three days. When it ends he tells Basalt how much he hates him, and all his father says, "I may be a monster, but I'm the monster who made you tough enough to become the Dragon Lord!"
