Two small figures were huddled around an oil lamp, hidden from the outside world by an upside-down wagon perched between two crates and a thin slab of rotting lumber. One wore a bright yellow raincoat, the hood of which hid her face in shadow. A long, dark braid that was normally tucked into the aforementioned coat hung loosely over the girl's shoulder. The other figure was smaller, more frail-looking. Her black hair was short and straight-cut, her bangs obscuring her eyes. The white shirt and matching bloomers she wore were stained with dirt and grime and torn at the seams. Her face was blank, much like her companion's, as the two of them watched the oil in the lamp slowly dwindle. The girl in the yellow raincoat spoke.

"Do you have a name?" she asked, glancing at the child across from her.

The smaller girl shook her head.

"Did they call you anything?"

After a moment of consideration, she held up her hands, one fully opened, the other extending a single finger.

"Six?"

A nod.

The girl in the raincoat smiled, but it was lost to the darkness. "They called me Five."

Silence returned to the girls' hideaway, accompanied by a cold wind. With it came a splash of rain that threatened to douse their light source, but quickly subsided. Six shivered, wrapping her arms tightly around herself. Five hadn't noticed the cold-- she was accustomed to it after a cycle spent on the water-- but it clearly still affected Six. She lowered her hood and unclasped the buttons on her muddy raincoat, then shrugged it off. The light of the lamp bounced off of it and back into her face as she offered the garment to her companion.

"Here," she said. Six stared at the coat for a minute before pointing at Five.

"Yes, it's mine. But I'm giving it to you. You're cold."

Six's movements were marked with hesitation, but she took the coat and slipped it on. Five took note once again of how tiny the girl was. On her thin form, the raincoat looked more like a dress, and the sleeves extended well past her hands. It suited her nonetheless, and would keep her warm. Six took her right index and middle fingers and tapped them twice against her lips. Five recognized the gesture at once. In the prisons of The Maw, children rarely spoke to one another, but they had subtle ways of communicating, and they had apparently continued using these codes throughout the cycles. Six had said, "Thank you."

Five returned the signal with her left hand, the appropriate acknowledgement of gratitude without debt. Six smiled just as the last of the oil in the lamp burned away.

Our girls made it to the city! Also that's how Six gets her raincoat in this AU.

As you can probably tell, Six is mute. Most Maw kids don't talk much in the Prison anyway, but Six never felt the need to speak even after she escaped. She's usually able to get her point across with gestures and Looks™ anyhow, so she's happily silent.

The Maw kids are named according to the order in which they arrive. Each cycle, there are ten boys and ten girls, and each one is assigned a number. Most of the kids never had real names to begin with, so they just adopt that number as a method of identification. The ones who did have names tend to forget them. Five and Six weren't in The Maw at the same time, though-- Five escaped one cycle before Six arrived there.

I'm having so much fun with LN stuff y'all you don't even know. I love these kids and this world so much. Unwatch me right now if you're gonna get annoyed by this story interrupting my MLP content lmao.
