Do you know how you got your name, child?

There’s a phenomenon amongst living creatures who’ve seen my visage. A strange feeling in the brain, a tiny phantom sensation that reminds them every so often of my presence. Those who have tasted the universe that I laid out for them will know this twitch, this… prickle. It’s the knowledge of their own mortality, made physical.

Your mother felt it the day she discovered you were on the way.

She had no idea what you were trying to achieve in your research. What it could do to you. If you had ever told her, I have no doubt she would have tried to save you. If you had only shared that part of yourself.

I understand. I do. Family is complicated.

But you persisted, nonetheless. You worked yourself to the bone to see my face. To know my name. Not the one given to me by the recipients of my gift, but the one I was born into. The one they chant to try and pull me from their nightmares, as if they could ever truly speak it. It’s been a long time since I heard that name.

For now, you may call me Death Rattle.

…I really am delighted to see you, child. But I do have one thing to ask of you.

Me and a few discord buddies did a challenge where we made ponies based off a name! This is Astral Prickle, a philosopher who looked a little too hard at god in her quest for understanding the universe, and paid the price for it. She's one of the few ponies who have seen Death Rattle's true form. Not that she could tell you about it.
