Its not too bad when you do it a bit at a time and my local wood always helps for reference, lost of strange shaped trees.

I cheated. I went into my local woods and took pictures of the trees. They tend to fall over and grow again and then fall over and grow again,
I look at the interesting shapes and draw them into the layout I want and then montages them and work the colours together.

Unfortunately if you don't watermark them then they appear very quicky in trading cards games from the far East as a couple of mine have done.
and there is not much you can do to protect them after that apart from very expensive cases in the courts.
