Description Taking a moment from her gathering, Spottedleaf looks up to the churning sky and wonders what omens will befall her clan.

I've been wanting to do a picture of Spottedleaf for some time now, and tonight I was in the mood for some interesting fur...so it was perfect timing. This started off with the intention of only being a sketch...buuuut I kind of went over the deep end lol; I'm very happy though.Β Now before anyone complains...tortoiseshells by North American definition generally have NO white on them (those are calicos), so because of that bias this is how she's always been in my mind.

She's also got a few stems of Catmint in her mouth, if your wondering.

Maine Coons are so much fun to draw! That's cool! I know a lot about cat breeds because I used to study them in my spare time when in high school

Thanks! It takes some experimenting, but once you get a tablet and play around with the brushes...it becomes quite fun. It's not as smooth as other drawing specific software unless you tweak it a bit, but I LOVE all the editing capabilities it has. If you have questions let me know!

QuietLittleLeaf In reply to Eisfluss [2012-12-19 04:30:59 +0000 UTC]

Ah. Right now Im using CS5, the new brush mode they've put in is amazing to paint with, though I generally jsut use a plain brush with pressure sensitivity on. One day I may upgrade to 6, but Im in no hurry. (Im not sure myself what the diff is between elements...I think it's just a more compact version of the program)

Ah, amazing the eyes really have it here, they are so open. I love that the reflection in them is a horizon line. Everything about this is really beautiful, and so very realistic Kudos to you for actually taking the time to look up the plant that she is carrying and draw it out properly. I see so many times that people draw medicine cats holding random leaves or berries and it kind of disrupts the purpose of the image.
The blending of colors is absolutely masterful- the tortoiseshell puzzle is always challenging but dear Spottedleaf here looks very natural and believable. Making the nose bicolored was a smart touch.

I hope I don't come across as disrespectful, I just want to inform you in case you didn't know that in England (where the books were written) tortoiseshell is synonymous/interchangeable with calico. I looked it up after I realized that not a single "calico" is mentioned in the books, even when characters are described as tricolor. Again sorry if my comment is rude- I do acknowledge that your idea that a tortoiseshell should have no white is correct as well. I'm not trying to change your mind at all.
Plus, everyone's image of how a character looks is different. I still refuse to picture Graystripe as having only one stripe

QuietLittleLeaf In reply to Cristacake [2012-10-10 19:34:30 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou! I'm definetly pleased with this.

Naw no worries, you were just commenting as I was looking a little more into it, and realized the Erin's are mostly British which would account for the differences (updated my description). Makes for some neat cultural viewpoints on what she looks like. ^.^

Cristacake In reply to QuietLittleLeaf [2012-10-10 20:35:38 +0000 UTC]

As you well should be, this is a wonderful portrait

I'm glad you didn't take offense And yes indeed it does! Sort of like how many people see Graystripe as a British shorthair while maybe it's more natural for American audiences to assume he's just a random cat breed. I only think of him as British shorthair because with how many times the cats said "lovely" and "rather" I just assumed they were British

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QuietLittleLeaf In reply to Cristacake [2012-10-12 03:50:38 +0000 UTC]

yeah Greystripe was an odd one, strangely enough I always pictured him as a fluffy Scottish fold...which is kind of ridiculous for a wild cat without fold parents, but meh lol. I think i was so enamored with the story the first read through I didn't pay attention to a lot of the descriptive detail, which is funny re-reading them now...it's a whole different stage lol.
As for his so called stripe..I always just chalked it up to him maybe having light tabby makings with a more pronounced stripe across his chest or something. The lightning bolt streak down the back seems kind of weird.

Anyhow thanks for the details, it's always nice to hear what people think ^.^

Could be wrong, but didn't the book say tortoseshell and white she cat or was that several other cats (so many torties i dont know)? I know there are a lot.
Also, amazing tortoseshell, she really is pretty :3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QuietLittleLeaf In reply to tadakiba [2012-10-10 19:26:23 +0000 UTC]

Yup, though I guess my views are skewed as a North American reader since Tortie's and Calico's are seperate entities; after doing a little digging I realize the authors are mostly British which accounts for them using Tortie to describe a calico cat. Though in a series with magical cats, you can't expect them to be too reputable lol. It's all up to interpretation too, that's half the fun of fiction fanart.
