Of course the barkeep is a spy. It comes with the job. You have any idea how much information gets told to the bartender? It's ridiculous how much they know. They're like barbers. You don't think they're listening, but trust me, they are.

Of course though I can understand Vertigo's reluctance in this matter. Aside from the obvious skeeviness of it...his most frequent patron is Ace...who's "special ability" is his "sixth sense" about lurking danger or being lied to...and out of all the Pokémon in treasure town (aside from Mr. Hood himself of course) I imagine Ace is the LAST one Vertigo would want to get on the bad side of. Especially since the first time Vertigo met Ace...
A short time later, Ace and Pepper soon reached the underground café, to see a bustling crowd of various Pokemon-patrons conversing with each-other inside, and a male Spinda tending the bar at the far corner of the room. As he casually made his way towards the bar, Ace couldn’t help but overhear a conversation between a group of Pokemon at a nearby table.
“Hey, did you guys hear about that commotion on the beach a little while ago today?”
“Yeah, I heard an Eevee almost drowned. She’s alright now, though. A Pikachu and a Riolu saved her.”
Turning his attention away from the chatter, Ace asked the Spinda bartender, “Have you by any chance seen a Lucario around recently? Tall, wears a brown robe, slight accent...?”
“You mean the guy over there who just came in now, shortly after you did?” the Spinda responded dryly, pointing towards the café entrance.
Whipping around on the spot, and seeing the familiar Lucario standing at the bottom of the stairwell that lead down into the establishment, Ace greeted with a lopsided smile, “Ben! There you are! I was wondering where you were at.”
“Ace? So, it is you, after all...” the Lucario deduced. “I wasn’t sure at first because now you’re a...um, well, a...”
“I know, I know... I’m still a little confused about it, too... But we can discuss that later,” Ace said, cutting off his Lucario comrade. “Anyway, I might as well introduce you to my new friend. Ben, this is Pepper. Pepper, Ben.”
“Um...hi...” Pepper greeted, smiling awkwardly.
“While we’re here, why don’t we get some refreshment?” Ace then suggested, changing the subject to ease the tension.
“I don’t suppose you have any money on you?” Pepper asked dryly. Seeing the sheepish expression form on the Pikachu’s face, she muttered, “...Right. I’ll take care of the bill.”
Taking a seat back down at the bar, Ace turned towards the Spinda bartender again. “I’ll have a double double.”
“Pardon me, sir, but what is a ‘double double’?” the Spinda inquired, perplexed.
“It’s a coffee with two creams and two sugars in it,” Ace explained, “It’s a favourite of mine back where I come from.”
As the Spinda began preparing the beverage, an Absol suddenly walked up to the bar next to Ace, and started slurring at him in a language that the Pikachu noted sounded like Russian, the smell of alcohol strongly evident on his breath.
Just then, two other Pokemon; a Gengar and a Manectric; approached the bar. Casting the electric-type a hostile glare, the Gengar translated, “He doesn’t like you.”
“Ask him if he wants a sympathy card,” Ace quipped smugly as his coffee was served to him.
“I don’t like you, either,” the Gengar snarled. “You just watch yourself. We’re wanted Pokemon. I have a bounty on my head worth more than this whole joint!”
“Ace, maybe we should just leave...” Pepper suggested nervously.
“Relax, Pepper. I think I can handle this,” Ace assured, nonchalantly taking a sip of his drink.
“If you’re so tough, why dontchya put your fists where your mouth is?” the Manectric growled.
Taking this moment to step in, Ben casually addressed the three surly aggressors, “These little ones aren’t worth the effort. Now let me get you something.”
Noticing an ominous metallic-glint appearing on the Manectric’s claws and the familiar prickle in the back of his neck, Ace suddenly duck-rolled behind the other electric-type with blinding speed and struck him with a now silver-looking tail right between the hind legs. As the Manectric howled in agony, curling up into a fetal position on the floor, the Gengar appeared to start charging up some form of dark-energy in his paws, only to be abruptly hurled backward and slammed into the far wall by an invisible force with a mere flick-of-the-wrist courtesy of Ben.
Allowing a moment for the commotion in the room to settle down, Ace turned to the last remaining member of the gang; the intoxicated Absol, who was now trembling in fear; and challenged with a cocky, lopsided smirk, “Your move, creep.”
After cursing something in Russian, the Absol hastily bolted up the stairs and out the exit of the café.
“Hey, wait up!” the Gengar pleaded as he hastily followed after his accomplice, leaving the Manectric limping closely behind, tail literally between his legs.
As soon as the unruly trio was out sight, the Spinda bartender sighed, “I must apologize about that... Ever since I started my business here, not all of my patrons have been, how you say... friendly...”
“Ah, don’t worry about it. This wasn’t my first bar fight, and I’m sure it won’t be my last,” Ace assured dismissively. “And hey, if any more lowlifes like them start bothering you and your customers again, you just come to me and I’ll straighten things out for you.”
All-of-a-sudden, Pepper slapped-down a handful of coins for Ace’s beverage on the bar counter, casting a menacing glare at her two-new compatriots.“The two of you, back to the house. We need to talk. NOW.”
So, kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place. XD

though would the whole "sixth sense" thing come into play when the danger isn't imminent like that? i mean, vertigo himself isn't really a danger or wants to hurt anybody, he's just going about his day while picking up tidbits of conversation here and there. he certainly doesn't plan on ever attacking anybody XD

True, it wouldn't trigger Ace's danger sense...but his intuitions go beyond just immediate threats. He's a master detective, so over time he'd pick up on the suspicious behaviors Spinda was engaging in. It might not be enough to accuse him of anything, but Ace might start spying and eavesdropping on HIM after a while. He might have already started doing that, knowing Ace. The hypocrite Ace tends to be sometimes he may have even approached Spinda and asked him to do the very same thing, only in this case to report on any potential criminal activity. Patrons passing money under the tables, talking about heist plans, anyone walking in with weapons they probably shouldn't have, that sort of thing.

You know...in retrospect this whole issue could have been resolved if Spina's Café had a security camera installed... Gee, it sure is a shame that he doesn't know anyone who has extensive knowledge of human technology to the point where he built a functioning lightsaber and a bionic paw from a box of scrap metal who's been living in the Pokémon world for years now and has been advocating to the guild to also upgrade their security to something a bit more advanced than a freaking hole in the ground-oh waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaait.

I mean, that standpoint is somewhat understandable, if extreme.
Ace: Why don't you just install a camera?
Spinda: Oh you mean those things every building, room and street corner in your world are equipped with that monitors everything everyone says and does so that governments and hackers can watch you go to the bathroom and barge in with machine guns if they don't like what they see?
Ace: ...Yeah okay but it has helped stop a looooot of crimes and/or helped authorities catch crooks after the fact.
Spinda: Not to mention the constant fear of all those computers and machines becoming self aware and deciding on a dime that it "doesn't need you anymore"? Like that thick-accented cyborg friend of yours?
Ace: Hey Rob Otto doesn't kill. He's a law enforcer, like me. I tweaked his programming to never take life if it can be avoided.
Spinda: Don't you carry around a laser sword that can cut through steel like butter?
Ace: I've never actually killed anyone with that! I use it as a deterrent.
Spinda: A "Deterrent"? You mean like those nuclear bombs your world is always threatening to use on themselves and turn every city into a smoldering radioactive crater?
Ace: I mean...that still hasn't happened yet...
