Description Near the end of the 21st century, most nations of the world wanted a meteorite/asteroid defense system. At the time, the Moon was still being colonized and the main focus of the human race was  finishing the orbital ring, expanding space exploration, and completing the micro dyson sphere. As a result, such a program didn't really have funding. After the mega project, that is the orbital ring and micro dyson sphere, was completed, humanity became a type one civilization and the desire to protect the cradle of humanity increased and the project received sufficient funding.

Once twenty years passed, the project, called "The Lunar Anti-Threat Network", was completed. A total of 400 mega railgun howizers were built on the North and South hemisphere of the Moon.

These guns had frightening capabilities. Each one was nearly 3.5km long and the frame was made out of a super-material stronger than graphene that was commonly used in ships that flew near the sun's corona. For their munitions, they fired osmium, the densest element of all, rounds 236 meters long and 78 meters wide with a mass of 8.495 x 10^12 kg (9 million tons) at 50% the speed of light. The projectile achieved this mind numbing speed via the detonation of a large thermonuclear bomb at the back of the barrel for the 'gun powder' with a super-material blast plate to protect the round from the heat and countless rows of high powered superconducting magnets.

Once fired, these rounds carried the kinetic energy of 9.543 x 10^25, or 97 septillion, Joules. In comparison, the kinetic energy of each round is 454 million times the energy released by the detonation of a 50 megaton hydrogen bomb. Due to the shear power of each round, each cannon has many recoil minimizers and inertia dampers.

As the mid-22nd century approached, there was construction of even larger guns in Earth, Lunar, and Martian orbit that could fire larger rounds at higher velocities and many other weapon platforms. However, during this time, it became easier to track asteroids and slowly drive them off course than to destroy them. As a result, these guns as well as the larger ones in orbit were reserved as security weapons against possibilities like human terrorism, extraterrestrial invasion, or close undetected asteroids that were on a collision course with Earth or the Moon.

Haha that sounds like overkill. Just try it alien bugs!

Damn. With weapons like that, if the colonists of Moon ever want to become independent, they could easily threaten Earth with total extinction.

:0 I actually never thought about that. That's kinda of scary to think about. But still, the Earth has weapons like that in orbit so the Moon colonies would pay the same price.

Nothing like old-school Mutually Assured Destruction, eh?

In the classic science fiction novel The Moon is A Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein, the revolting colonists of Moon use electromagnetic catapults - originally designed to export Lunar products to Earth orbit - to bombard Earth when Earth refuses to acknowledge their independence and sends its armies to squash the revolt. The war eventually ends with heavy damage to Earth and the Lunar colony achieving its independence.
