Description
The Ares 3 astronauts were surprised and bummed out when they found out about Boreum Station and were not actually the first to set foot on Mars. Still though, the touchdown of Ares 3 on Mars, just like the Artemis missions, inspired a generation of young people to become astronauts or join the USSF or NATO Space Force. However, it also pushed the countries in the Eastern Asian Trade Alliance to set up their own base camp on Mars in addition to the Moon (Luna). Russia had already had a program, the Luna expeditions, for the Moon as well as China who had the Lunar Exploration Program. Russia, in 2035 AD, begun the Mars expeditions and China the Mars Exploration Program. In the early 2020's, China had already done a simulated Mars base, Mars Base One, in the Qinghai Province desert which had the closest terrain to Mars on Earth. The setup of the real Mars base would have a similar layout. To get to Mars, Russia, China, and other EATA countries decided to collaborate in order to make setting up a Mars base more economically feasible. In 2036 AD, Russia's Mars program and China Mars program planned to set up their own base for the alliance. Russia and China would call this base "Mars Base One". When setting up the base, Russia and China would use cargo spacecraft under the EATA Space Force that used an Orion-drive. The Orion drive allowed for manned trips to Mars is as little as 7 days as opposed to NASA Ares spacecraft which used nuclear thermal rockets and reached Mars in between one to two months. Mars Base One was set up near a frozen lake that could be used for rocket fuel and life support.
When Dr. Mason Reed's Mark 1 Reed Drive schematics were stolen by EATA spies and Hafnium-178m2 reached industrial levels, Russia and China successfully developed the Reed Drive to use on their ESF Red Dawn battleship. Then Mason's Mark 2 Reed Drive would be developed and used on their Mars spacecraft instead of an Orion drive. From then, EATA expanded their Mars bases while NATO was expanding theirs. The two alliance battlegroups sit in a state of mutually assured destruction since they could each blow each other to bits in orbit and on the ground which meant it was just better for them to use their forces to secure their territory instead of fight over the entire planet. The existence of the USNSC's Boreum Station and that it had its own nuclear arsenal reinforced this. Earth's Moon Luna was different since quick resupply missions were easier in cislunar space if warfare caused any destruction. NATO and EATA getting into a fight on Mars would undermine all the work they put into getting there in the first place. This made Mars the 'Berlin Wall' of the Solar System.
