The only advice I can give about trees is to pay attention how they are like in the real world. There are several kinds of trees, each growing differently. Some have branches very high, some have branches very low.
Also, this is a crazy suggestion, but... Nature likes to make us think it's of one color, even with it's a composition of several colors. For example, I use purple color when I make trees. Nobody has said anything about that. Leaves are usually green, of course. With, you know... photosynthesis and all...

Maybe I should do that. Grab sketch-book and go to park.
In fact, that is something what I wondered about a few days ago,
we usually see everything in one color, not only trees..
Like wood is brown, grass is green etc..
But when you observe more, then there is many others tones, and colors..
So maybe we must see things how they truly are, if we want create them correctly?
Purple? I never noticed that..
But that's it, because we all know, the trunk is usually brown

I actually adapted the idea of purple tree trunks from a painting I saw years ago. It had trees whose trunks were actually painted purple, while still looking like they weren't out of place. Then again, those kinds of trees usually have white trunks.
I recall someone saying that even "realistic" portraits twist certain attributes to make them look better. Of course, colors have an effect on their environment as well. Everything affects everything. Things aren't easy.
