Its unfortunate that I couldn't jam all the characters into one illustration (for technical and time-saving reasons xP) but when narrowing it down to four I like to think Mario, Kirby, Pikachu and Link are the Nintendo staple boys.You've got the original plumber mascot, the pink side-scroller alternative, the giant Japanese parent-money-eating franchise, and the only pretty-boy-RPG that Nintendo has ever done right.
Anywho, SSB games are probably the best fighters ever concieved. There are "classics" like Street Fighter, KOF, Tekken etc. But in my opinion, nothing is quite as innovative and fun as the SSB franchise in the genre.
Mario, Kirby, Pikachu and Link belong to Nintendo

I have to agree with you on the fighter front. I own Soul Caliber II, but I don't particularly like it. Brawl, on the other hand, is one of my favorite games.

Wow, Pikachu's eyes look a little eerie, almost possessed...and Mario looks...just way too hardcore to plumb any pipes let alone save a whiny turnip-whipping princess.

Wow, this is astounding!
It's been awhile since Brawl got a pic, not to mention one of such epic proportions. The mood set makes me feel as if I'm in the raging heat of a battle, performing dexterious dodges and potent strikes. Super Smash Bros. is definitely the best fighter/overall game out there!

Freakin awesome! If its a stock match, pikachu's probably gonna die first cuz all the others will get pissed from his high pitched squealing and gang up on him. As for Link, Mario, and Kirby, it's survival of the fittest.

I think that Samus should be there instead of Kirby... but it is a great piece of art anyway, congrats!

More people know Kirby than Samus, at least from what I've been exposed to.
SF bores me at it's core, utilizing the same principles as just about any fighter.

That's because SF was the grand daddy of fighters, it practically paved the way for all the others, KoF, MK, Fatal Fury, you name it, most of them where born as immitators, but SF is perfect, it doesn't need to change.
And yeah, there are more Kirby games than Metroid ones, that's why people knows Kirby and not Samus, but Metroid was created in 1986, years before Kirby, Super Metroid is considered the Best SNES game by tons of gamers, Kirby Super Star is just "one of the greatest" but not "the" greatest game, and thanks to Metroid we have Castlevania: SotN, the best game ever created... I think the Metroid franchise is by far more important and had more impact in the gamming world than the Kirby one. Anyway, that's just my opinion

Obviously Samus has considerable rep for the Metroid franchise, but in terms of "Nintendo staple boys" its all about popularity and the little pink blob's just been around the block more.

But I can also understand your feelings. I am indeed a Smash Bros. fan, I just wouldn't call it the best fighter ever. It's hardly a fighter, more so a party game.

I'm not convinced by the level of this "local" tourney that you're aware of SSB as a competitive fighter.
Everything you mention still tells me you're a casual player that judges thinly on the game at first-glance without actually knowing or getting into its advance qualities/techniques.
The controls aren't anymore simple than most fighters I've had a go with, obviously very different in terms of move-input but we all know the fighting system's completely different already.
Again, at first glance the move list is simple, but there are various characters that require a lot of improvisation, canceling, and judgment on stun/knockback.
For example, a regular scrub playing Link will input "A, A, A" for chip damage, whereas a competitive/advance player will know to input "A, A, short-hop/neutral A" or cancel into a Foward-Smash or ^A. This way they can follow up with more damage or a safe, lagless retreat.
Another example with Link is that newbs would approach by just running up at pressing A, instead of short-hopping with his hook-shot grab or dash-canceling into his Up-Smash.
That's just what, one character? Out of an incredibly unique/large roster? Combined with all the different levels that provide strategic advantages? Don't tell me this game lacks depth.
As for mass amount of players per game. No, just no. It's 1v1 on the competitive level. (Of course, there's still team tourneys that go with 2v2)

And no, I'm not ignorant to it. I've participated in a few tournaments (local, nothing big) and it can be very competetive. But the only fighting aspect it has in it is that the characters damage one another.
I wouldn't call it a fighting game. I say it's a party game due to the simplistic controls, less than in-depth move list, and mass amount of players per game.

Dynamic poses... correct colors... intelligent use of shading... realistic appearances & setting (even realistic for Kirby and Pikachu, top notch!)... what else can I say? This is a masterful piece, and even though it would have been a grand old time if the rest of the Super Smash Bros. roster was here, you've succeeded with Nintendo's Top Four.
